A CASE OF INFANTICIDE.
Rosa Johnson Implicates an Old Col
ored Woman of Raleieh.
llosa Johnson, a young white wo
man cf Raleigh, was arrested a few
days ago on the charge of killing
her new born babe. She ehowed
that the child had been murdered
and thrown in a garden near the
J(,hnson woman's home. She waa
carried to the hospital under guard
ill remain until she is
Htronger, when she will be placed in
jail. The woman has made a con
fession and implicates Elvira Pow
ell, an old colored woman who was
present when the child was born.
She 8ays the woman took the child
to take care of it.
The negro woman has been ar

DURHAM POLICE HAVE BUSY DAY.
Harvey Lyons Kills James Simmons
With a Rock'. Negro Cut Hlllman
High" Ed Bass Arrested for Wife
Beating.
Durham, May 11. A faUl affair
grew oat of a play and scuffle be
tween two negroes on West Main
street, near the Dake factory this
afternoon at 1 o'clock. James SImms
and Harvey Lyon were first in a
play and then In a scuffle that re
sulted in both parties getting mad.
The killing of Sirams followed, i
rock being used by Lyon.
There is one chcumstance or coin
cidence In this cae that is of unu&ual
interest. Years ago Beck Lyon, the
the mother of Harvey Lyon, waa ar
rested on the charge of murder.
With ber was a man who it was!
olaimctl by the State had killed his
wife and children on account of the
Lyon woman. They were both
placed in jail at Uillsboro, this being
before Durham County was formed.
While Beck Lyon was In jail this
Harvey Lyon was born. Born In
jail, when his mother was charged
with murder, ho Is today back in
jiit charged with murder. It is a
circumstance that is unusual It Is a
strange coincidence.
Soon after the killing of Si ranis
there was another excitement when
Hillman High, a white man, was
badly cut by Ed Baas, colored. Ba?8
was arrested, this being after a con
siderable chise, however, and he was
locked up. The wounds received by
High were not such as to make his
condition serious, but the informa
tion Is that the aesault was almost
unprovoked.
About the time that Bass was be
ing brought in the officers arrested a
negro on the charge of beating his
wjfe. This caused a great deal of
excitement for a few minutes. It
looked like the newly elected police
officers were getting a good breaking
in on their first day.
Two Men Shot Dead, Woman in Jail.

Deputy Sheriffs Boone and Buchanan

Spruce Pine. Barrels opened fire on
them. After an exchange of shots,
Buchanan fell dead, and in a mo

A Temporary Farewell.
An Irishman in a rather small
town found hlm-elf out of a job and
was getting hungry. One morning
having exhausted all efforts with
members of his own church (Catho
lie) to get work he braced the paster
of the Baptist church and was told
he would have to become a member
of his church before he could give
him a job, whereupon Pat agreed,
and as he was walking Into the
church he looked back at the cross
on the spire of his church and said,
"Goodbye, Lord, until times get
