All agree that here is a prob lem as yet unsolved. "Students oflgtepper? the liquor question," says the inch mood News-Leader in commenting upon some aspects of the matter, will be interested and confounded to know that the State has tried open bar rooms, confining the liquor traffic to the cities and towns, the dispensary system and prohibition and the murder record has continued to increase steadily. Yet, during twenty years newspapers and preach ers and prominent men in the Stato have been working patiently and fearlessly to arouse public sentiment to the point of making murder un fashionable and dangerous." This is all true enough. The leaven to which The News Leader refers has not yet succeeded in leavening tbe lump. Similar conditions are found in va rying degree throughout the South nd over nearly the entire country. Worst of all, this evil grows, year by year and decade by decade. Ante bellum Southerners were sufficiently prone to make targets of each other no men ever guarded their personal honor more jealously but they do not remotely compare with us for bloodiness. In particular, the assas sinations, which are now the rule, would have been abhorrent to them. The duel of their day has passed for- pxejfcTkezijawtf 'Yrom, fin"dfim'fie(J benefit. Public sentiment, which doomed the duel, will some day stop the wholesale murder of this later period. Such a prospect, how ever, is remote. So long as while men murder each other or negroes with lees danger of punishment than many a petty offence involves, blood will continue to flow freely in the land." North State. The only argu ment they could have would be that they simply want office, regardless of the welfare of the country. In commenting on Gov.
