Recently the Baltimore Sun, the oldest and greatest newspaper in the State of Maryland, stated that, while it was and had been always a Demo crat in politics, it was forced to ad mit that the election of Taft for President would be for the bejfn tereste not only of the whole country but also for the State of Maryland. At once -all the cheap partisan xmwiuwc newspapers over the South began to abuse the Baltimore Sun, and some of . them (and con spicuous among those of that kind was the Raleigh News and Observer) made the charge that the Sun had been bought by Judge Taft or his national committee. The Charlotte pbserrer. though supporting Mr. Bryan refused to Join in this slandering tirade, but went to work to learn the truth. When It did, it published the following editorial: "As a means of breaking the force of the Baltimore Sun's sup port of Judge Taft the charge has been widely circulated that a controlling interest in the paper had been bought by Charles P. Taft, a brother of the candidate, tm- charge is explicitly denied by its own statement that 'The Sun has not been bought by Mr. Taft nor br anr one else, nor has any one any ia- lerest in it except those connected with the family of its founder It is a subject of regret that this great paper could not see Its way clear t support Mr. Bryan in this campaign, but one of great pleasure that It Is able to acquit itself so promptly and unequirocally of a damaging accu sation.
