The Junior Order la holding a meeting at Cary to-day. Raleigh police court is having Its iiHtiai quota of, "blind tiger" cases. Exercises will be held at the Sol diers' Home to-day to commemorate the birthday of Jefferson Davis. The State Board of Agriculture is now in Kession in Raleigh, but the oil inspectors have not yet been named The Molly Springs Council of the Junior Order Monday presented a Bible and flag to the Fuquay Springs school. Lewis Crowder, a sixteen-year-old ngro boy, was drowned in Partin's pond, near Willow Springs, Sunday afternoon. Mrs. M. E. Sorrell, of this county, passed away Monday. The funeral services were conducted by ReV. W. R. Beach, of Cary. The Tabernacle Baptist Church in Raleigh is to be remodeled and en larged. When this work is complet ed it will be the largest church In Raleigh. The Raleigh Police Commlfsion Is having a hard time trying to select a hief-of-police. They have taken two bites at the cherry without success. A civil service examination will be held in Raleigh, June 19th, to fill the position of elevator conductor In the Federal Building at a salary of $600 a year. Federal Court is in session In Ra leigh this week with Judge Connor presiding. The oath of office was ad ministered to Judge Conpor Tuesday morning by U. S. Commissioner John Nichols. Mr. Wildes Fined $75. Mr. Chas. D. Wildes, an attorney of Raleigh, while under the influ ence of whiskey last week went to the homes of Mr. A. J. Wllllford and Mr. R. W. Dunn, who lire In his neighborhood, and threatened to shoot members of the family, be cause he thought they had re ported him to the police. Mrs. Dunn 'phoned for tbe police Satur day morning who took Mr. Wildes to the police station where he re mained until he had gotten in better condition. He appeared in police court yesterday morning for trial and was fined $75 and costs. Mr. Wldes said be much regretted the occurrence and expected to go to Keeley Institute for treatment. Def radjLBt In Chattanooga Lynching Case Before United States Ssprcsne Court. Washington. D. C, June 1. The proceedings of the Supreme Court shortly after noon to-day in which It was expected that former Sheriff J. Shipp. Henry Padgett. Nick No- Ian, Jerry Gibson. William Mays and Luther Williams, of Chattanooga, Tenn., would be sentenced for con tempt of the Supreme Court in the Johnson lynching case, was devoid of the sensational features which It was generally expected would attend the event. The defendants with their counsel, Judge G. W. Chamblee, Judge Lewis H. Shepard, and M. O. Clift, all of Chattanooga, arrived at the court shortly before noon, at which hour the court was to con vene, as usual, immediately after the. members of the court entered counsel for the defendants spoke briefly in turn on the application for a re-hearing. The members of the court at once retired for counsultatlon. They were absent but a few minutes. On their return they announced that it had been decided to grant the applica tion, and that the defendants would be required to give bail in $1,000 bonds each at the United States Dis trict Court at Knoxville, Tenn. This Is the same amount under which they have heretofore been held. As the Supreme Court adjourns to-day until the fall term in October, the defendants will not be called be- for that tribunal again for five months, at least. Man Found Near Durham in a Dying Condition. Durham, May SI. Thomas Gar rard, a young white man, was found in a dying condition by the side of the Southern road, about three and one-half miles west of Durham, this morning close to o'clock. Whether he was stricken by a train or was murdered and thrown -on the track In a dying condition, is not certain. as yet.
