His sudden death at Warrenton on Sun day shocked the entire-State. Judge Whedbeo had just finished a one! week term of court in Raleigh, and j had gone to his home. The cast of the city of Raleigh against Swift & Company, meat pack ers, for selling spoiled meat here, pending for a year, closed in the Su perior Court Friday by the imposi tion of a $100 fine in one case and suspension of judgment in. the other; two. The fine was imposed in the case in which a dressed hog, in very bad condition, was delivered by the packers to a dealer in the city mar ket. Fines aggregating $1,000 in the police-court are now dwindled to $10C Cases From Ninth District Before Supreme Court. Cases from the Ninth District were called in the Supreme Court Tuesday and the following cases have been ar gued: . State vs. Eugene Webb, appellant, from Durham, argued on merits and and on motion of attorney-general to dismiss appeal. This was a case in which the charge was assault with . intent to commit rape. B. R. Houston, adminisctrator, vs. Durham Traction Company, et al., Petitioners, from Durham; re-argued on petition of defendant to re-bear. T. C. Johnson vs. W. B. Lassiter, appellant, from Guilford. - James McLellan vs. N. C. Railroad Company, appellant, from Durham. Funeral of Mr. K. H. Parker. The funeral of Mr. K. H. Parker, of Bensonf'who died Monday a week ago, was held Thursday. Mr. Parker's death resulted from an attack of pneumonia. He was one of the lead ing men in Johnston County and stood high in his community. Mr. Parker was sixty-three years-old. Congress in a Wrangle Over the Rule Washington, April 5. The second day of the extra session of the Sixty second Congress opened with a wrangle over the rules to "be adopt ed by the new house which develop ed into a filibuster led by Represen tative Mann, minority leader. After the routine business had been transacted, Representative Hen ry, chairman of the new rules com mittee, sent to the desk a special rule providing that the new rules of the House should be the order' of the day; that four hour's debate should be had upon them, and that the Republicans should have the privilege of offering a substitute for the Democratic rules. Representative Norris, of Nebras ka, leading insurgent, wanted to be allowed the privilege of offering amendments to rules as offered by the Democrats. A school election was called for District No. 1, St. Matthew's Town ship. The auditor was tendered the use of the commissioners room as an of fice. J. E. Annual Convention of Baptist Young People's Union. Statesville, N. C, March 30. -The second annual Baptist Young Peo ple's Union Convention of North Car olina, which will 'be in session at the First Baptist Church of Statesville, April 18th to 20th, will be a gather ing of no little importance to the Baptists of the State. Among the speakers for the occasion are some of the most prominent Baptist lead ers of the South, and it is expected that a large number of delegates from all sections of the State will be here to avail themselves of the op portunity to hear them. The first convention of the kind, which was held in Durham last year, was well attended, and now that the Baptist Young People of the State are better organized, the convention here will be more largely attended. The vis itors will be the guests of the Young People's Union of the First Baptist Church while here. ' Negro 'Mute. Kills Brother With Stone Monut Airy, N. C, March 29. A mute negro named Gunther, who lives near this city, became enraged at his brother, a young negro, on Sunday afternoon, and ordered him to leave his house, the quarrelsome brother refusing to do so until the! mute used force. He returned, how ever, and renewed his efforts to in terrupt and worry his mute brother. ; Finally the mute becoming greatly, i wrought up over the bad conduct of his brother, threw a stone at him, crushing his skull. The injured man lived until this morning, when he died. The officers were promptly no-1 tified and arrested Gunther, who it" seems, was trying to maice nis es cape. The Chil ean legation to-day received bids from American shipbuilders for the construction in this country of two dreadnoughts; 21,000-ton battleships of the first class.
