Hall, a negro, was before the j court on the charge of abandonment. ' He put in a plea of guilty. Judgment : suspended upon payment of costs. Turner Smith was sentenced for two years on the roads for assault and battery; and John Edwards, col ; ored, got a three-year sentence for ; manslaughter. Dave Ilinton, who appealed from j a $10 fine in Police Justice court for j retailing liquor, was sentenced to ! serve six months on the roads, but later the Judge reduced his sentence to three months. Noah Wall and Leonidaa Perry, : both white, were tried Tuesday for : cruelty to animals. It seems that ; they killed one cow and wounded j four belonging to a man named j O'Neall. They were found guilty. Harry Jones, colored, was charged i with the larceny of some goods from j E. E. liroughton's store. The bill ! was amended to forcible trespass and judgment was suspended, upon pay ment of costs by the defendant. C, arrived in Richmond to-day and began an investigation to ascertain whether his isu-r. Miss Ola Thaxton, aged 23 years, who died here March 30th, was given burial, as the attending undertaker states, or whether the body was cut to pieces by students in the dissecting rooms of the Univer sity College of Medicine. Undertaker John B. Billey says he received the body rfom the City Home and buried it in the potter's field at Oakwood Cemetery. A rec ord in Chief Health Officer Levy's of fice says the bddy was turned over to the Medical College on May 10th. Miss Thaxton, who is described as a beautiful girl, with deep blue eyes and golden hair, came to Richmond in search of work, taking a position in the office of a tobacco factory. She became ill and died before relatives were notified. The contract has been let for the ! new building for the Raleigh Bank ing and Trust Company, which is to cost $80,000. The work will be done by J. B. Can & Co., of Atlanta, Ga. The bank building is to occupy the site at the corner of Fayetteville and Hargett Streets on which the present building of the Raleigh Banking and Trust Company stands. The new building will be 80 x 130 feet, and will be Grecian in style of architec ture, twenty columns to be features of the exterior. Many Tobacco CYops Destroyed in the Vicinity of Apex Corn is Badly Damaged Also Loss Over Fifty Thousand Dollars. Apex, Wake County, and vicinity was visited by a severe wind, rain and hail-storm Tuesday afternoon about 5 o'clock. Many crops were completely destroyed. So far as the writer has been able to learn, Mr. A. D- Upchurch, who has an excellent Jinn two miles this side of Apex, was the heaviest loser. He had about twenty acres in tobacco which was al most entirely destroyed by the hail. 11 r. Upchurch's loss, on his tobacco fop alone, is estimated at about $2,-' ' Mt- Messrs. James Brown, Carey Upchurch, W. T. Castleberry, C. G. perry, j. j Maynard, F. P. Upchurch and Mrs. W. H. Howell suffered heav j!y from the storm also. The heav !?st of the storm began about four ailes south of Apex and reached a distance of four miles northeast of Apex where it began to lose its fury, a other words, it covered a distance f about eight miles in length and abo"t two and one-half miles in ldth. At least fifty crops were al most destroyed by the hail, and in aiany tobacco fields not a leaf was Jit standing from the stock. I Coughed Up the Bullet. James Logan, a negro who was seriously shot by Lee Hill on the night of July 5th coughed up the. bullet a few days ago at St. Agnes' j Hospital, where Logan has been un-1 der treatment since the night he was shot. ! The man who did the shooting has not been caught.
