The Raleigh bar at a meeting held
a few days ago decided to ask the
Legislature to give WakeCounty thir
ty weeks of court under the new re
districting plans, instead of fifteen, as
is now the case. Mecklenburg and
Buncombe have petitioned to have
those counties made separate dis
tricts, and there was some talk of
asking that the. same consideration
he 'shown Wake, though it is probable
that neither Mecklenburg nor Bun
combe will get the single districts

Girl Student Chokes Negro and
Kicks Him Out of Room.
After entering several rooms and
almost frightening to death students
in the Faircloth Dormitory at Mere
dith College a big burley negro was
put to route by one young lady, who,
it is said, choked the negro and kick
ed him out of her room. The kick
proved of sufficient force to cause
him to depart for parts unknown.
According to the police, the negro,
who they think is a half-witted one
living in Watson field, in the east
ern part of the city, entered the
Faircloth building early Saturday
night probably for the purpose of
robbery. It is said that several girls
were greatly frightened and driven
from their rooms. However, when
the negro entered one of the rooms
he was surprised by the young stu
dent occupant and soon had good
cause to make a hurried exit. His de
parture from the building was in
such a manner as to prevent his cap
ture. He has not been seen smce.-

lill for New Charter for Raleigh.
Senator .Little and Representative
Bunn Tuesday introduced in the Sen
ate and House the bill to authorize
the people of Raleigh to vote on the
question of adopting the commission
form of government. The bill em
bodies the main features of the Hous
ton, Texas, and Greensboro charters.
The Board of Aldermen will be au
thorized to call an election in March
to allow the people to vote on the
question.
Corporations Over-Persuaded the
Committee.
The joint Senate and House Com
mittees on Corporations and Corpo
ration Commission Monday after
noon, by a large majority, reported
unfavorbaly the bills by Representa
tive Grier and Senator Jones to place
all water power, electric light, electric
power, and gas plants, and telephone
lines under the control of the Corpo
ration Commission. These bills, a
substitute for Representative Kel
lum's bill, had some changes from
the Kellum bill, in that it placed
municipal light, power, and water
works plants in control of the Corpo
ration Commission. There was a
delegation of representatives of tele
phone companies from all over the
State before the committee to oppose
those sections compelling all compa
nies to have physical connection with
each other.
The committee then went into ex
ecutive session, and by a large major
ity agreed to report the substitute
bill adversely.
After adjournment of the joint
committee, the House committee
held a short session at which Rep
resentative Kellum again brought up
his original bill to place all water
power, electric light and gas plants
under control of the Corporation
Commission.
Mr. Justice offered amendments to
place telephone lines under control
of the Commission and to give the
Commission power to require physi
cal conection of all telephone lines
or exchanges. The bill thus amend
ed was reported to the House.
