Lewis Self. the markets MANY RAILROAD MEN' IIERK Last week forty-five new cases of measles were reported to the Raleigh Health Department. Florence Jones, who was accused of selling whiskey in Raleigh, has been sentenced to a term of a year. She appealed and had her bond placed at $300. Mr. J. B. Ellis, of St. Matthews township, died Saturday night of pneumonia at the age of 34 years. He is survived by a wife and three children. There have been GOO cases of grip among the patients of the Insane Asylum at Raleigh this winter. This was nearly half of the number in the asylum. In Wake Court a few days ago Walter G. Ferrebee, who lost a hand and was otherwise Injured while in the service of the Norfolk Southern Railroad was awarded J 0,000 damages. li. D. Noth ing yet has been given out from the meeting. FIGHT IX THE HOUSE. Engineer Heward Gets $500. Member of the Legislature From Cur rituck Assaulted by E. R. Johnson, Who Was Later Arrested. A right in the legislative halls Mon day evening created some excitement for the time being. Representative S. J. Payne, of Currituck, was as saulted by Mr. E. R. Johnson, a mer chant from the same county. This writer was not present at the time but the special correspondent of the Greensboro News gives the following assistant account of the flsbt and Its sequel: "Representative Long cauea tne attention of the members of the House to the fact that in the early evening Representativ S. J. Payne, of Currituck County, was assaulted by E. R. Johnson, a well known mer chant of Currituck County, and his ties, with this endorsement thereon: "After exercising due diligence, the defendant, Lewis Self, is not to be found in this county." You are, therefore, further notified to appear at the March Term, 19 IS, of Wake Superior Court, which convenes on the 4th of that month, and an swer, demur or plead to the com plaint which has been filed in this court; otherwise the plaintiff will de mand to be allowed to prove the alle gations of her complaint and have judgment accordingly. He offered a resolu tion that Johnson be arrested by the sergeant-at-arms and brought before the bar of the house for punishment for wanton and malicious assault upon the gentleman from Curirtuck. "It was exDlained that Mr. Payne neainst the Seaboard Air Line ror damages growing out of the publica tion of his record as an engineer, which was thrown out of court in the spring, Tuesday received an award of $500. Mr. Seward asked for $30,000. It was the same amount for which he ha(j introduced a bill to increase the sued last year. That tribunal said that his case should have been permitted to go to the jury. Zeb Vance Johnson of Cary Dies Sud denly. Acute indigestion resulting, it is said, from eating stewed oysters, that Johnson approached Payne in the corridor of the capitol, when a heated argument arose, in which Johnson accused Payne of bad faith and misrepresenting his constituents and being really a Republican Payne replied that 400 citizens were asking the change along with two of the three members of the; present board.
