'COUNTY AFFAIRS.
Second Day's Meeting; of the Board of
Commissionera Doable Tax Ordered
School Items Payments, Etc,
The board of county commissioners
met again yesterday, present chairman
Ardrey, and commissioners Oates,
Whitley, Morris and Brown. The min
utes of the previous day's session were
read and approved and the following
business was transacted : r
It was ordered by the board that the
county treasurer transfer $10.48 from

Dewtse township, the same being the
amount due by apportionment of 1882,
a part of No 38 having been cut off and
added to district 37. r '
The clerk Of the board was author
ized to enter on the tax list for the year
1883, opposite each and every persons
name a double tax on all property and
polls failed to be listed as required by

out of the erection of a' county fence

Mecklenburg. under and by authority
of an Act of the General Assembly of
the State, ratified 1883.
The order passed at Monday's ses
sion of the board dividing school dis
trict No 24, Clear Creek township, was
revoked and the committee of said dis
trict No 24 was notified to appear be
fore the board on the Irst Monday in
November, 1883.
The following bills were ordered to
be paid by the treasurer: E H Brad

for bridges in Dewese township and
hauling the same $8.25 ; W P Little for

The Indestructible Colored Man.
The season for cotton gin accidents
has opened, and from now on the doc
tors all around the country will
have plenty of odd jobs in stitching
and binding to do. Yesterday morning
a colored man came to town for Dr. J
P. McCombs to go out to Esquire Wil
liam McCombs' gin house, in Crab
Orchard township, where the engineer,
a colored man named George Green,
had been caught up in a belt and badly
hurt The belt had been hanging loosely
from a revolving pulley, and Green in
some manner got caught up in it. When
help arrived the belt had gathered
Green's arms about his neck and was
hanging him in the most approved
style. The engine was stopped and
Green was released from his perilous
position.when it was found that his left
arm was badly broken and he was
severely hurt about the breast. A few
more revolutions of the pulley would
have resulted in instant death to Green.
Last year Green met with a similar ac
cident and had his legs broken up. If
he lives through several more ginning
seasons he will be a specimen that Bar
num will want to get hold of.
A Bold and Daring Robber Captured.
Yesterday morning as Mr. Jim Ross,
junior partner of Phelan & Ross, open
ed his store and was sweeping out, dust
ing and setting back boxes, he saw a
curious looking object lying in a mac
caroni box, which upon closer inspec
tion proved to be a fat coon, taking a
nap. Jim fell across the box with a
board and his coonship surrendered
unconditionally. It was a big sped
men, weighing 25 pounds. For several
nights past Phelan & Ross had been
missing cheese, herrings, sugar, candy
and cakes. A freezer that had been
left half fall of ice cream at night was
found to be empty next morning. They
had accordingly been setting a watch
for the thief, but were unsuccessful in
their efforts to detect and capture him,
until Mr. Ross stumbled on him by
accident as has been described. The
coon was no doubt the guilty . party, as
the expanded nature of his girth indi
cated. How he came to be in the store
and how long he was there, are ques
tions that puzzle.
The Opera House Seats.
Something must be done to the seats
in the opera house, or the sad spectacle
will soon be presented of the curtain
rolling up before an entirely empty
house. Manager Sanders' recent effort
to remedy the "sticking" propensities of
the seats has not only , been a failure,
but has actually made affairs worse.
More than one dress was torn as the"
wearers attempted to rise from the
seats last night, and the sight of a young
man going down stairs holding his hat
suspiciously behind indicated that the
seats are no respecter of sexes. One
might almost as well sit down in, a pot
of glue.: The numerous casualties re
ported from the rising of the audience
last night, calls for prompt action on the
part of the opera house managers..- The
matter must be remedied at once, or the
opera house may we be dosed.'

Race Horse and Threshers.
Jay Eye See, the horse that won the
big race a few days ago, was named
after J I Case, maker of the well known
Agitator" thresher, which is in use by
so many Mecklenburg farmers, and of
which Mr Noah Brown is agent Dur-
the past season, the Agitator did some
remarkable work in this county.
Messrs Neely, Walker & Co, of Steel
Creek, threshed four hundred and one
bushels of wheat daily for six weeks in
succession. Mr A B Reed, of Mat
thews, threshed 300 bushels one morn-
ng before breakfast He says the Agi
tator at work attracted as much atten
tion as a circus.
Opera Honse Last Night.
Grau's company played "Olivette''
to a very large and select crowd at the
opera house last night and gave very
good satisfaction. The company is
small and carry the majority of their
forty-five artists on paper, but there
was enough of them to give a first-rate
play. Mr Alonzo Hatch s tenor was
capital, as was also Miss Bessie Grey's
soprano. There were several good voices
in the company. Mr W Paul Brown
was a fine comedian, and kept "bob
bing up serenely" much to the delight
of the house. Altogether "Olivette" is
very well handled by Grau's company;
but those who had expected anything
extraordinary. were disappeinted.

Bicycling at the State Fair.
Mr E B Eaglehard, manager of the

us that arrangements have been com
pleted for two bicycle races on Thurs

under the supervision of the N C, Agri
cultural Society. Races to begin prompt
ly at i2 m. Mile dashes ; open to any
Amateur resident of the State. Prizes 1

The Sort of a Circns it is.
Next Saturday is circus day in town
and of course everybody from around
about will move in to see the show.
Sell's circus is said to be a strictly
moral one. The Chicago Daily News
says : "It is a big, clean and respectably
conducted show. None of those rough,
ro wdyish, tiresome or annoying features
which usually accompany a large cir
cus are present The menagerie part is
a treat, from its cleanliness, the size
and convenience of the cages and the
condition of the animals. The visitor
does not find a few wornout specimens
of ill-fed and mangy animals, so con
stantly exhibited as to become as com
mon as cows. All the living things are
well cared for, and are, either from
their kind, their size, or their nature,
rarely seen in traveling shows."
Rough on Butler.
Boston Adveitlser, (Be).)
Our Governor excels all other public
men of the day in the ability to relate
an incident in such a way that while
the assertions made cannot be flatly dis
puted, his interpretation of facts and
characterizations of acts render the.
whole story essentially false. Instances
of this strange faculty might be given
without number.

A Beautiful Trio.
Sath In New York Tribune.
Not long ago I was passing a house on
one of the side streets, when mv enm.
rade said :
"Here lives a man who allows his
wife to make his living."
"How?"
"His wife takes care of a rich yung
drunkard who can not take care of
himself. The drunkard has a million
at least. He gave this house to the
husband. The three travel around the
world together. People make their ob
servations, but the three are true to
each other, whatever their relation is."
Said I:
"Perhaps the world is too harsh."
"Perhaps so," said he, "but then the
single man ought not to be drunk all
the time."
Nothing- Iilke It,
No msd'clne has ever been known In the Sooth
so effectual in the cure of all those diseases aris
ing from an Impure condition of the blood as
Rosadalls, the Great Southern Remedy, for the
cure of Scrofula, White Swelling, Rheumatism,
Pimples, Blotches, Eruptions, Venereal Bores and
Diseases. Consumption, Goitre, Bolls, Cancers,
and all kindred diseases. Rosadalls purifies the
the system, brings color to the checks and restores
the suOerer to a normal condition of health and
visor.
It is asserted that the ordinary cosmetics used
by ladles are productive of great mischief. We
believe this is so. and that a better means of se
curing a beautiful complexion is to use some good
blood medicine like Rosadalls. the Great Southern
Remedy, which cleanses the blood and gives per
manent beauty to the skin.
