W. Wallace as shown by the books Just completed for the new tax year as compared with the same for 'the year preceding. . ...... ... -.-v . Just how to account for these varia tions in the total number of tax re ceipts which the sheriff's office makes out from year to year in anticipation of the payment of taxes by all those in the sheriff's baliwick, which In this in stance includes only Charlotte-Township, is a question as yet unanswered. - It is suggested that many noils in the town ship escape the - tax listers from time to time, and It is known that by making special " effort several hun r d polls that have not been returned can be discovered at any time the - work is undertaken. The figures for this year, showing the total number of tax receipts ready to be turned over to taxpayers when . they settle their State and county taxes with the' sheriff, is 7,824 Iast year the number was 8,585, which Indicates a decrease or falling off of 761 taxpayers... . j This falling off, however, does not af- j feet . the total amount of taxes due.' as there is a satisfactory increase for this year as compared . with the year just preceding. - r BUILDINGS AT THE PAIR GROUNDS .ARE COMPLETED The buildings at the fair grounds are ready to receive the exhibits, it is said, and the grading and rolling of the track has ' been completed. The officers of the Charlotte Fair Associa tion are rejoicing n the fact that the big undertaking planned for this year has reached the point where they can say they are prepared with the new buildings in the new' grounds to give the best stock show and the best agricultural exhibit that has ever been presented to the public in this country The managers of the new associa tion have planned ' the new grounds and themildings it contains with a viewto buidling up an interest among the people in those things which con cern the farm. It is intended that the Charlotte fair shall be something more than a big show and frolic; it will be all that and more. ' The new association has been ex ceedingly fortunate in the locator, of the grounds, for it occupies a very attractive position, lying right along side of the electric railroad, and on an elevation which overlooks the most' picturesque part of Lakewood Park. A special , road has been built lead ing from the wagon gate opening into the grounds to the Tuckasegee ma cadam highway, '. giving to each one an easy opportunity to get ' into the grounds. The convenient manner in which the entire plant has been, laid out Indicates that the-master hand has been , at work, everything shows that completeness of ; detail which is often lacking where such work is left to the novice. When the people of the county see the' new fair grounds plant they are going to feel proud of It and will want to help make the' annual fair what H should be. ' . Mrs. Wood B. Highbrow on the Issues. "Yes, yes, indeed! The Progressive party is certainly a grand one,' said Mrs. Wood B. Highbrow, laying down her newspaper. "I declare, I just tremble with enthusiasm when I think that, at last, a great party has taken up the cause of wouan suffrage, for which such noble women as Clara Barton, Florence .Nightingale and Barbara Fritschie have, enigmatically speaking, shed their last drop of blood! ' ''I am sorry, however, that they have taken the name of Bull Moose for their slogan, because it Is such a weit a common, Impolite, aesthetic name, don't you think? I firmly be lieve they adopted it because Teddy is so fond of saying bully; but Wood Insists that they did it to; win the Irish vote. You see, the Jrjsn are noted for their bulls. "I was reading the other day that Rugged Kindling. In a poem, speaks of the bull moose and its cow. Now, though I am heartily in f avpr of the Progressives I am simply unalterably opposed to having such a nom de plume as cow, hurled at me by a Democrat. " . - Vt:Vv'-'V "What is it? Well, perhaps you're right. I ought to be-willing to emu late the example of the noted women I just tabulated, so I'll try and bear eyen such: an indemnity for the great cause. Colt of Nacoochee In stitute, Sautee, Ga., one of the at tractive speakers at the woman's con vention October 21-23, will address the children of the city in the First A, R. P. church Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Every child in the city between' the ages of and 16 is cordially invited to hear her. . Mrs. Colt is an especially, at tractive speaker to children. One who knew and was closely associated with her at Mon treat this Summer says: "The addresses and suggestions - of Mrs. Colt will be among the most in teresting - and instructive features of the program. . Mrs, Colt is a native of Toronto, but has been a resident of the South for a number of years. The work which she and her husband are doing at (Nacoochee . Institute, in the mountain section of Georgia, is . most commendable, and is being crowned with distinct Buccess. 'Puring the past summer Mrs. Coit was ; in charge of the work for chil dren and girls at Montreat, and no part of the work during this, which was the most successful season the Summer assembly of Southern Presbyterians has yet enjoyed, was more, distlnctfully suc cessful than that which was directed by : Mrs. Colt. During the greater part of the Summer nearly .100 children were under her training, and half as many young girls were receiving Instruction in those things; which are especially 'at tractive and helpful to girls. . Mrs. Colt possesses to & marked degree the power of . attraction to ; children and young people, and she uses this .power in that way which is doing much toward - the solving of the problem of winning and holding them to the Church, and for all that is uplifting and best in life." - (Washington Herald.) , He was trying to make an impression on a pretty nursemaid who had a little boy out In the park. "I wish you were my governess," he simpered. "So do I," said the girl, . What would you do?" Td take those cigarettes away from you and get your hair cut." J. ' W. Copeland, of JUayton, Ohio, purchased - a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for bis boy who had a cold, and before the bottle was all used the ' boy's cold was gone.
