A South Af rican jungle in miniature is being con structed at the Bronx sootogloal gar dens for the reception of 87 baby snakes of the rare variety known as Fer de Lance. The entire 87 came to the xoo in a single litter last week. To insure their surviving In captivity xt was necessary to counterfeit the natural conditions of existence In the Jungle and thereby entice them to eat properly and take suitable interest In life. : The Fer de Lance snake is provid ed with a "food catcher" at the end of its tall. This is a yellow marking which is an exact reproduction of a worm and the snake can make its tail simulate the movements of a real worm. The young Fer de Lance, to decoy its food, crawls into "the high grass and coiling up there, lets the tip of its tail protrude a few Inches. Patiently it awaits until a tree frog or other victim is attracted. The frog grabs the worm and the snake grabs the frog. In a very few minutes the frog disappears and the snake with draws its decoy and contentedly goes to sleep for three or four days. (London Opinion.) ; ' Only "Words.
