Special to the NKWsan.1 Times. Washington. Jan ir. Senator Butler opened his head yesterday at precisely two o'clock and closed it at 4. 'JO. I sent you yesterday the reso lution to which he spoke. There wao a sudden vanishing of Senators until only 7 were left at the start and most of these were conversing or writing. Suppose I give the picture as it really was: Butler had on clean cuffs and his 8ampson country Sunday doe-skin coat all hanging down before. He had circled around, and spoke from Senator Stewart's seat so as to command the "body." Tillman sat on one of the sofas, chit ting with some friends. Skinner and Shuford and Stroud and Bell, of Colorado, had come over from the House side as willing sacrifices. Pntchard was in his seat, but did not seem to hear a word. Strange to sav, old Sherman and Morrill listened for a "short while. Perhaps they are utter hypnotizing the young Senator for further uses. The only thing Peffer does to earn his salary is to listen to:.il t l e speeches that an made; they s-jy h,. h; never missed one; he i!o. sn't oun take time to shave; and so be listened. There were present in the Senate when Butler began besides these mentioned, Senators Stewart, Jones of Arkansas Pugh, Lindsay, Call, Congressman Kerran l mhho other congressmen. "He thus betrays his peo ple in the interest of hartv success." "The test of every man's patriotism is who will he support for President?" -How can a silver man be for a gold man for President!" The vote will be close, aud much interest thus attaches to .Martin's vote. But it is thought by some that the jun ior Virginia Senator will vote for sHver under the influence of his colleague Daniel, for whom he is kuown to have great admiration. W. E. C.
