THE COUNTY ELECTION.
A Large Number of Votes Cast and the
Result in Doubt.
The returns from the different
precincts in Mecklenburg county
indicate that the legislative ticket
has been elected by a small majori
ty. The Senatorial fight is in doubt
and it will no doubt take the official
returns to decide. Both Dr. Al
exander and Mr. W. C. Dowd claim
their election. A number of irreg
ularities have been reported, especi
ally in the Senatorial fight. Some
of these irregularities will be a ba
sis for abundant proof to throw the
vote of several precincts out if pres
sed. The matter is in the hands
of the Chairman of the executive
committee to decide.
The legislative ticket has been
undoubtedly elected by a small ma
jority. Throughout the entire town
the regular Democratic ticket wa
badly mutilated by the voters for
causes unknown. Hid Charlotte
done her part as she has done in the
past there would have been no cause
for any close vote.

How Bryan Received the News.
Lincoln, Neb , Nov. 4. Mr.
Bryan, who left the house only once
during the day, and then to attend
the funeral of a neighbor, did not
remain upstairs as he did last night,
but came down into the library to
receive the returns. Some of the
bulletins that came in were of a re
assuring character and the Demo
cratic candidate plainly showed by
his manner that he felt more en
couraged. A number of friends
who had held aloof yesterday and
to-day came and chattered pleasant
ly with him. Mrs. Bryan also help
ed entertain visitors. Like her hus
band she seemed in good spirits.
Manv of the telephone messages
from friends and supporters con
cernirg the result were answered by
Mr. Bryan personally. He talked
very conservatively, indicating in
his replies to these inquiries that
official counts in some States might
be necessary to determine the re-
suit.
Mr. Brvan went to bed shortly
before 10 o'clock. He said he would
