Wave of Cooler Weather Is Headed This Way Says the Weather Man The present hot wave is to be of short duration, according to informa tion given out today by the local office of the weather bureau. A wave of cool er weather is now headed this way from the northwestern states, the van guard of which is expected to arrive in this section late tomorrow after noon. . Sharp contrasts in temperature were shown this morning by the government weather reports. Warm weather pre vailed last night over the Ohio Valley and the southeast, with sufficient heat to call into requisition electric fans and such luxuries that make warm weather bearable. The lowest tempera ture here last night was 66 degrees, at Wilmington, 68; and at Louisville, Ky., 70 degrees. Yesterday the highest temperature here was SS degrees, and a temperature near 90 degrees is in dicated for this afternoon. Our neighbors in the northwestern states, however, must have thought winter was returning, or that the groundhog had gotten his calendar con fused again, or some such phenomenon had happened. When people at Denver awoke this morning, the ground was white with snow, and the mercury stood at freezing. Snows occurred at localities in the states of Wyoming, Colorado, and the Dakotas. At Willis toa. North Dakota, the lowest tempera ture last night was 10 degrees below freezing, or 22 degrees. Freezing tem peratures occurred last night in about a half dozen of the northwestern states, accompanied in many instances bv killing frost. No destructive temperatures are yet indicated for this vicinity, but consider ably cooler weather is expected by the local forecaster, wno tnis morning gave out the following forecast: "Fair tnnltrht: Wednesday, showers and cooler." New York, May 12. Higher Liver pool cables and reports of unfavorable western weather caused an opening advance of 5 to 6 points in cotton and active months sold about 9 to 15 points above yesterday's close during early trading. Liverpool was an active buy er of near months here while there was covering and considerable fresh buying for long account. The summary of the weekly weath er report was considered generally favorable but the market remained steady early in the noon hcur with ac tive months about 10 to 16 points net higher. Som unfavorable features in the weekly report restricted offerings la ter and the market ruled quiet but steady at a net advance of 9 to IT points. New York Spot Cotton, New York, May 12. Early trading was brisk at further slight gains. The upward movement in prices con tinued during the forenoon, sending the net gains 10 to 12 points above yesterday's level on all months at the second call. There was a further improvement during the afternoon, the interior com ing in with a fair volume of buying orders and prices on third call showed gains of 5 to 10 points from the open ing.
