Screen Comedian Says Size
and Face Saved Him on
Smuggling Charge.
How his face and size nrnhahlv sav
ed him from going to jail recently
in California is one of the experiences
of Walter Hiers, widely known moving
picture comedian, who is appearing
this week-end in person at the Im
perial theater.
"A nartv of movinsr ninture aotors
including myself, was returning from
an uiego, saia Air. fliers, "we were

pistrano. We had a Chinaman in the
party who had been , acting in some
pictures we had been producing.
"Now. in California the anthoritips
are always on the watch for smug
glers and every Chinaman without the
proper papers and identification is nab
bed by the officials. Well, that blamed
Chinaman had foreotten tn hrine- h-.n
papers along, and, as luck would have
ii, we were arrested.
"We were suspected of smuggling.
The officials backed us up in a corner
ana so snowerea us with questions
that we were almost nnnvinwrf TOO
were smuggling , something. ' We could
explain noining to the satisfaction of
the officials. Things looked pretty bad
for a while. Just as Wfi WPPfl hotrif-
ning to realize that we were in a worse
fix than Ave had imagined, one of the
oniciais exciaimea:
" 'Well. I believe this is old Walton

Mr. Hiers is a native of florrfoio aa

a place which he characterizes as the
nearest place . resembling Paradise on
earth. Everywhere can be seen the
beautiful homes of the movie actors.
The city is the movinsr nictnm
of the world. The moving picture peo
ple spend $30,000,000 in
annually, said Mr. Hiers, and they
have become one of the upbuilders cf
the city.
