CHARLOTTE NEWS JUNE6,l92l MONDAY THE M'ELROYAND RAY COMINGJUDGES Will Preside Over Superior , Court in June and July Respectively. Judge J. Bis Bay, of Burnsville, will preside over the July term of Meck lenburg county superior court. This will constitute his first appearance on the bench in Charlotte. He is now presiding in the judicial district which includes Monroe. He presided recent ly there over the long-drawn-out trial of the Ross will case, which attracted state-wide attention. Judge Ray was elected to the bench at the last elec tion. Judge J. E. McElroy, who has pre sided over one previous session of su perior cort here, will preside over the June term of superior court, which opens here June 13. There will be one week of criminal courti at that time followed by one week of civil ' court. The criminal court docket for the first weeks of . court just ahead have few cases of interest other than one or two rather sensational cases against people charged with making liquor. Three white men from the Hunters ville section, are under grand jury in dictment to answer to the charge of helping operate the 2,000 gallon liquor- making outfit that was broken ud near Huntersville some weeks ago when dep uty sheriffs, ruial policemen and Char lotte policemen swooped down on a secluded spot at dawn. The opera tors of the still had flown but thai grand jury has in the past few weeks made true bills to the judge presiding in this district charging three men with making liquor. The case against A. D. "Vanderberg charged with handling liquor on a ra ther large scale in a basement which he had rented in a store- fronting on South College street is also up for. trial. Capital ,SurpIus and Profit, $1,800,000.00 A, L. ' I i Editor A. C. Huneycutt of The Stanly News-Herald, expressing won der that no move has ever been made in Mecklenburg county to build a fine road from Charlotte to the Stanly county line to meet the fine highway that county has built from Albemarle to the Mecklenburg, line, calls attention to the fact that a good road built tc the Stanly county line would pat Charlotte in touch with Albemarle, Stanfield, Norwood, Mt. Gilead, Oak boro, Troy and Raleigh beyond that. The Stanly editor says the Chir lotte papers never refer to the possi bility of building a road toward Stanly county but always boost other reads and say it is hard to understand thj indifference of this county toward con necting up with Stanly and Mon orn ery by modern road His editorial on the subject reads: HARD TO UNDERSTAND. "There are some things hard for i's tn liniiprstfinri One nf thesf Isi whv Mecklenburg county seems absolutely j oblivious to the importance to that ' Pi county, and to Charlotte especially, of the highway from the Albemar'o Tviy. It has now been more than a year since this county finished one of the finest highways in the state to its very "Western border in the direction of Charlotte. This road is a state hicjn way, too; but, so far as we are able to learn, up to this good day, Meck lenburg seems to care absolutely noth ing as to whether it connects up with us .or not. The road has built East from here through Montgomery coun ty,- and is now being, finished up through Moore, and within a few, months will have been completed all the way to the "state capitol. The bridge over the Yadkin river, which :s ! one of the most expensive bridges in i the state, will be finished by the thmi I the autumn leaves begin to fall. An! 1 yet, the Charlotte papers are talking i every other road which is being bui't, I or to be built, save this one, and st:ll no move is made to fill in the short link west of Stanly which would con-; nect Charlotte up with this fine sec-; tion and which would connect up Meck lenburg with the best and shortest highway to Raleigh. There is a rea- J son, of course, for this seeming care lessness on the part of Mecklenburg, , but what it is we simply can't undet'- stand. The completion of the rna-.l through Mecklenburg would put Albe Mt. Gilead and Troy, all good towns within much easier reach of the city of Charlotte, and it seems to us that this would be of greater benefit to Charlotte than any other town or sec tion along the entire line from Raleigh to that city. With all the hustle which Charlotte commands, why don't that city see the importance of Mecklen burg finishing up her link quickly? Tt is har dto understand." x MEMORIAL EXERCISES.
