EDUCATION AND HOSPITALS The' council on medical education and hospitals reported that the work un dertaken in 1005 of formulating and se curing uniform standards of medUal tducation in the United States has in a large part been completed and that greater advance had been made in medical . education during the past 15 years than in any other field of edu cation in the country. The council believes th:tt, in order to preserve the general practitioner and family doctor, the undergraduate medical course must be thoroughly re-organized and atten tion given to the training of Vie gen eral practitioner. At the same time a better method of instruction for specialists should be developed in post graduate courses. Tiesardins the hospital situation, tne report of the council shows that there are no hospitals in 56 per cent of the counties in the United States; that thpri nrp 4.013 nrivate. sreneral and special hospitals for the treatment and caFe of the sick with a total of 311,159 beds, or one hospital bed to every 340 persons, in the United states, ine dis tribution ranges fecm one hospital in every 43 square miles in Massaenu- setts to one in every t,su squaro miina in Nm-pila: the distribution by population varies from one hospital bed to every 1.054 m AUssissippi to one bed for every 139 persons in Ne vada. Regarding medical colleges, instead of 162 medical schools as was the case in 1906 there are now only 84. The number! of medical students has di minished from 28.142 in 1904 to 14,850 tViis vpar.
