Capital ,Surplus and Profit, $1,800,000.00 CO-OPERATION IS SEEN BY MILLER Declares Co-operative Sell- ing .Best Tiling started in South. Co-operative selling is the biggest thing ever ' started among Southern farmers, according to Charles E. Mil ler, of the farm bureau. In the opin ion of Mr. Miller, the plan is going to succeed all over the South. "Ofoing to opposition at first, it was rough going for the plan," said Mr. Miller, "but everything is running smoothly now, and in a few days I believe it will be possible to have something encouraging to give out." Mr. Miller declared that this move is the first of its kind that has been of such wide extent. It already em braces the wheat growers of the West, the California fruit growers, and oth ers, and the Southern farmer is ready to come in. "Some peole think that the move ment is a monopoly and a trust," con tinued Mr. Miller, "but that is not the idea at all. "Those who heard Aaron Sapiro's speak here on co-operative marketing know that a great part of his address was taken up in showing that the plan was to use other meth ods than the monopolistic. For in stances, he showed . that in Califroijia the first plan put into execution was to create a demand for the products of the fruit growers, and men skilled in baking sent all over the state showing the housewives how to make raisin bread and other food contain ing raisins. "The plan means a big pool of cot ton, of course, and even if we get no more than 20 per cent of the crop signed up under the contracts being preferred, I believe it will be suffi cient to make the plan work. It will be a big fight, but I think we are going to win out." SELL ROAD BONDS ON NEXT SATURDAY HERE A special meeting of the board of commissioners of Mecklenburg county j will be held next Saturday for the pur-1 pose of opening bids for $600,000 of the $2,000,000 road bonds voted by citizens of Mecklenburg county at the bond election some months ago. Chairman J. B. McLaughlin of the board issued tne call for the meeting Monday afternoon. The Mecklenburg Highway Commis sion expects to lend to the State Highway Commission enough of the $600,003, to construct the first perma nent highway under the new regime from Charlotte past Davidson to the Iredell county line, the Iredell county authorities and the State Highway Commission to co-operate in the sanio manner toward building that part oC the highway that will lie in Iredeil county and that will connect the Ire dell with the Mecklenburg stretch of highway. The Mecklenburg Highway Commis sion asked the board of commissioners some weeks ago to sell a minimum of $600,000 of the road bonds in order that they might proceed to work as early - us possible toward building highways.
