THE CHARLOTTE NEWS,3 CHARLOTTE, N. C, WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, JUNE 22, 1921. 14 Tinker Storie byCarlysJeH. Holcomb 0 MB. AND MRS. SANDY. ' Someone came running along the edge of the- brook. At intervals he stopped and teetered back and forth. Tinker Bob had seen him before and was glad to see him again. He seem ed to enjoy being in the open rather than among the thickets and in damo places. This fellow was slim and trim and ran very close to the edge of the water. His legs were long and so was his bill. His white waistcoat was marked with black spots. Tinker Bob always called him Sandy, the Spotted Sandpiper. . "Peet-weet! Peet-weet!" he cried as he approached close to the Forest King. "Peet-weet! O King of the For est, don't you take another step. You startled me so that I don't think I II get over it all day." Tinker couldn't for the life of him understand what he had done to startle poor Sandy. If he was startled he didn't run away he came right on. Then suddenly Mrs. Sandy came out of the bushes near by and screamed to the top of her voice and squatted down right in front of the King. "What is all of this confusion about anyway?" asked the King. "I can't see anything to get worried about." He looked about thinking perhaps someone might be after Mrs. Sandy. But he could see no one but Mr. Sandy, and he did look scared all right even if the King didn't know what it was all about. "My, I'm thanking my lucky stars that you didn't take' another step,"' said Sandy. "For, if you had you would have stepped right on our eggs. I surely had a dreadful scare." Sandy kept bobbing back and forth. Tinker was surprised enough. H? showed it too as he looked down at Sandy. "I didn't see any eggs," said he sort of doubtfully. Mrs. Sandy stepped aside and what do you think he saw in the sand? "Wen. right in a little hollow in the sand the King saw four white eggs with big dark blotches on them. "I surely would not have seen them if it hadn't ben for Mrs. Sandy," said Tinker Bob an! he stepped back out of the way while Mrs. Sandy slipped back on the egg3 and settled down comfortably. Then tho TCintr thrmsrht if he hadn't seen her ,do it he wouldn't know she was there. "I certainly would have stepped on these eggs if you hadn't called to me. But I'm glad I didn't. I don't see how you dare have a nest in the open like this." "This is the safest place in the world," said Mrs. Sandy.' -J?he eggs look so much like, the pebbles around here that no one sees them. The only time thei-e is danger is when someone comes along like you did and doesn't see them. But that doesn't happen often. Next The Finest Eggs In The Forest. "When we attend the movies, which we do regularly, we always wait anx iously for the news reel or topical . re view. We don't have much time to read newspapers, and we like to keep track of what is going on in the world. While some other features on the average movie show may not hold us entranced, we are always sure of something new; and we are certain to see the vital episodes of the world's news dished up, hot off the griddle. And the best part of it is, we are never disappointed. We know exactly what we are going to see. We saw our favorite news reel yesterday, and. it ran exactly as follows: Wellesley college girls rolling hoops. Canoeing on bay at Copenhagen. Battleship passing under Brooklyn bridge. Count De Kay arriving from Eu rope. Secretary of the Navy . looking through porthole of battleship. Living American flag made by Squawtucket school children. As they sped back to Paris in the taxi, procured by .John only after many hardships, Gwenda sank back languid ly, and John slipped his arm about her waist, to make her more comfortable, as he explained. The moon was a silver glory, the air balmy, alive, and Gwenda felt her heart beat thickly, as she caught "the flame in John's eyes, whenever he turned them upon her. It was at a particularly bad stretch in the road that the taxi heaved and bumped unmercifully, and Gwenda found herself literally hurled into John's arms and compelled to cling to him to steady herself. , At the touch of her soft hand on his John strained her to his heart, pushed back her head, where the moon light couldl stream fairly upon it, look ed into her eyes, then kissed her full upon the, lips. There was not a word said for several moments an eternity At the end John picked Gwenda up and placed her on his lap and held her in his arms and close to his heart all the rest of the way home. Such was the winning of Gwenda. And all the wav home she gave her lover, back kiss for kiss, - happy to be his chosen wife, speechless with the force of her love. It was a blazing-eyed young couple that walked into the apartment two hours later, there to be met by a most excited, yet infinitely gentle Fern, who laughingly kissed them both 'at the great news and then made them sit down to a hearty meal. - It was very late begore John finally took his departure, and-Gwenda and he clung to each other, hating the neces sary separation. "I've been in love with you, darl ing, since the first moment I set eyes on you," John confessed, as they sat locked in each others arms. "I need you more than anything else in life. I love you. love you, love you, want you " and here he sealed her tremb ling lips with a kiss. Tuesday came, and with it the recep tion. Gwenda got into her most be wilderingly feminine frock, a hat that she knew full well would bring a thrill of joy to her lover, and then, ready for anything, she sallied forth to the Coun tess de Fienyille's mansion. Here she found the reception in full swing, and herself not the least con spicuous person there by any means. In fact she had never realized before just how many friends she had made in Paris. Towards the middle of the after noon she heard the countess call her name, and in answer turned for a mo ment to find herself smiling into the as tonished eyes of John Neale, who was being introduced to Mile. Vivian Miles with all the pomp and ceremony that Gwenda had secretly yearned for. At the look in his eyes Gwenda col lapsed completely. She laughed until the tears rah down her cheeks, then hastily explained to the astonished young countess just what it was all about. John, too. joined in the laugh, even though it was at" his expense, and then the. countess, who was a wise little person, went off and left the two alone. "The etfeciency expert. naaiiei faced," etc., went on Gwenda merci lessly, remerrjbering some of John's choice phrases. "Stop, stop; that's not fair," he groaned, as remembered them all too hell himself. "I'll kiss you right here if you don't stop torturing me. "I'd like it," suggested Gwenda un blushingly. DeVALERA WANTS GUARANTEE OF U.S. London. June 22. (By the Associated Press.) Christopher O'Sullivan, an Australian correspondent, in an inter view with Eamonn De Valera, the Irish republican leader, in behalf of an Aus tralian news iews agency, asked him whether Ireland would accept a status similar to that of the British overseas dominions, to- which Mr. De Valera said: . . "No such status has been offered Ire land. Until it becomes possible to translate Ireland to the antipodes or another hemisphere, no such status can be realized." Asked what solution he proposed, Mr De Valera replied: "A neutral Irish state, whose inviolability would be aruaranteed by, say, the United States and sttaes of the British empire and any others that could be secured as signatories. "Free Ireland would never allow its territories or harbors to be made the basis of an attack upon England' by an outside power," Mr. De Valera contin ued. , ' "Any pledge Ireland gives, Ireland will keen. With an independent Ire land beside her, Great Britain would be more, not less, safe than she is from foreign attack.
