THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, CHARLOTTE, N. C, TUESDAY AFTERNOON, JUNE 28, 1921. 16 mum- Tinker torie OFFICE byCarlysle H. Holcomb HAMMER CALLS MRS. HAMMER. Jack, the Rabbit, was so surprised to see the King he could not think of anything to say. "Well, how does this happen to be?" asked Tinker Bob. At the sound of the King's voice Chlaf Porky awoke. He hated having ths King find him asleep on the job. His job was to watch the Dwellers of the Forest and report, if necessary, to the King when anyone was out of his place. But the Chief was such a lazy fellow that many times he went to sleep instead of reporting. "It happens, O King, that I was so far away from the Brier patch when Red Fox came along that I could not take time to get back to the place of safety and so I remembered the home of Mr. Chuck and came here. Whit puzzles me, O King, is to think how Red Fox got out of bed and found me so soon after you were at the Palace. It seems like a dream. It doesn't seem to be true, for when I saw him last I didn't think he would be out of bed for a week." Jack sat up on his hind feet and shook his head, unable to ex plain why Red Fox had made his -appearance. "Hammer, hammer, hammer." came the sound from the tree. "If that's all you want to know I can tell you all about it." It was Hammer, the Flicker, speaking. He had been listening to the King and Jack, the Rabbit. "Well, Hammer, tell us all about it," said Tinker Bob. Chief Porky sat up to listen. He, too, was puzzled by the actions of Red Fox. Hammer drummed on a hollow limb for a moment as though paying :io attention to the King's request. Sud denly there appeared, as though comirg from the clouds or some other myste rious place, Mrs. Hammer. She perch ed herself by the side of Mr. Hammer and looked at the King first, then at Jack and then at Chief Porky. She was not such a handsome creature as her husband and she was also more shy. She never drummed on the hoi low limbs just to make a noise like her Southern Railway System Passenger Train Schedules. Arrival and departure of Passenger trains, Charlotte, N. C. Lv. Her delight was to find an ant-hi'l where she could feast without being molested. "What do you want Hammer?" she inquired. "T want vnn to tll the King about Red Fox and how he came to get out of the Palace bed to cnase jacK, inc Rabbit. You know, and I want the King to know how well you can re member things you see." Mrs. Hammer, the Flicker's wife, perched herself on the King's knee us she was always willing to do as her good husband asked, and began to tell the story of Red Fox's escape from the Palace bed. As she began a now listener came to the oak tree to lis ten. We will hear her story tomorrow. Next Cotton From His Tail. MORE THAN THOUSAND ARE DRAWINGON FUND Des Moines, la., June 28. Arm in arm, Edward and Cherry followed Mrs. Randell into the house, stopping at the entrance to admire the beauty of the crimson ramblers which grew in scented profusion all up one side of the porch.. Cherry buried her nose deep into a mass of them, then turned to admire the rest of the flow ers blooming at her feet. "This is just the most beautiful gar den, ever," she exclaimed delightedly to Mrs. Randell, "and I know that . I shall be wonderfully, happy living here with you and all these flowers. And such a homey, scrumptious house, too. You know, Mrs. Randell, I've been raised in the city and I've never had a chance to sit down in a garden like this very often. We all had to work at home and there were very few trips to the country, even in t.hi summer." " ' ' "I'm glad you like us, my dear," re sponded Mrs. Randell, gently, "and I'm sure that we are going to love .having you with us, too. But now let's go in and have some food. I'm sure you two young people must by starving, after your long trip. Jan, tell Phoebe to put the breakfast on the table right away," she said, turning io her daughter. Once inside the spacious home, Cherry exclaimed all over again at the invitingness of everything. The roomy hall, the sunny sitting room. which led one right out to the wide veranda, with its long French windows opening to the full sweetness of thj flowers without. On the other side of the entrance hall was the drawing room, a big room, and to Cherry's way of thinking, not half so comfy as thj other one. At one end of it was a, large fireplace, and round the buff-colored walls hung stiff portraits of dead and gone Randells, who looked serenely and solemnly down on the new bride, with almost a quizzical expression in their eyes. Here, the chairs were set P H ILLIPS stiffly in their places and a ;wide satin covered couch seemed to argue against anyone ever being so rash as to try V.3 smooth depths no matter what the ch cumstances. The sun only filtered in at the windows, which was another point against it, according to Cherry; and there .were, wax flowers under a glass case, which were more formid able than a row of German spears to her way of thinking. , Up the wide staircase Mrs. Randell led them, to the hall above, from which many doors opened, showing clea-i, cool bedrooms beyond. At the end of the hall the lady of the manor threw open a door, and welcomed Cherry to her new room. "It used to be Edward's, my dear, and I thought as long as htr was . so used to it and it . was so large and pleasant he'd like to go on hav ing it for you and himself." - It was a huge, sunny room, with four large windows- A hickory tree stretched its broad green arms protect ingly outside ; one of the windows, as though extending its blessing to the bride. , . "I just love this room, Mrs. er M " said Cherry, stopping con fusedly, to wonder what she should call Mrs. Randell. "Mother, please, dear, always moth er. Just as much to you as to my "Re ward," said Mrs. Randell, patt'ngr Cherry's hand reassuringly. "1 kin;v it's all strange to you now, but you'll get used to it. and to your new moth er, too, I hope, dear girl." "Now I'll leave you to clean up a bit, then come down to breakfast and we'll get acquainted over Aunt Phoe be's hot biscuit and excellent coffee," Mrs. Randell admonished, as she whisk ed out of the room. "It's sweet to have you share my old room, darling," said Edward, as ha drew his wife into his arms and kissed her tenderly. "Welcome, welcome home, dear, many times." (To be continued) If you can put in 60 per cent of your time tendin' to your ow: business and 40 per cent lettin' other people's business alone, you'll get in but darn little trouble.
