The chapter has pledged $500 to the Gettysburg monument fund. Mrs. L. B. Newell, who is chairman of this fund, is making an effort to pay this $50n before the state convention meets at Winston-Salem October 12. She reported $354 in bank and asks that each member who has not contributed her $1-00 to this fund, to send same to her at once. C, Mrs. Lessie Hinson Robertson entertained at a beautifully appointed party an nouncing the engagement of her sister, Miss Annie Theresa Hinson to Ralph Turbeviile Holmes. In the receiv ing line were Mrs. Robertson. Mrs. H. C. Nash, of Badin. Mrs. W. F. Wall, Miss Ruth Flowe, of Spartanburg. S. C. and Miss Bettie Steed, of Mt. Gilead. Punch was served by Misses Mildred Nash and Katherine H. Robertson. In an interesting automobile contest Miss Sto?d proved the winner and was pre sented with a "toy auto." The hostess was assisted by her sister. Mrs. Smith served a salad course with accessories, then came little Fran cis Robertson and Eleanor Hinson with a little white satin puffed bags tilled with rice and a little hand painted heart with "Annie and Ralph, Oct. 4th" on it. Miss Hinson is the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hinson and is pretty and popular. She was educated at Meredith College and is charming in personality. Mr. Holmes is the son of Mrs. Fan nie Tuherville Holmes of Charlotte, and is a well known and popular young man. He holds a responsible position with Burwell and Dunn Drug Company. The marriage will be one of wide- inter est. About fifty guests enjoyed Mrs. Robertson hospitality. Reid, the former professor of chemistry in Due West College. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Guthrie and Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Wingfield left Fridiy for Blowing Rock to spend the week end at Mayview Park Club. They are motoring and will be home the first of the week. Charles W. Tillett, Jr., has returned from Morganton. where he spent a week with Mrs. Tillett and the children at the old Avery home. Mr. Tillett was there for the reunion of the Avery family. Mrs. Tillett and children will remain in Morganton until cooler weather. Mrs. J. Rush Shull and children, J. R. Jr., Betty and Billy, have return ed home after a month's visit in the Western part of the State. Among the places they visited was Mrs. Shu.l's old home at Cliffside. John R. Brown, of Washington, D C, is here on a visit to his family and friends. Mrs. J. R. Barkalow and thre daughters have gone to Wrightsvil)3 to spend a week or so. Forrest C. Ausband left Saturday evening for Philadelphia, where he will spend his vacation of two weeks. He will visit friends in New York an 1 Boston as well as Philadelphia. Mr. Ausband is in the water works depart ment of the city. M. B. Speir has returned from a mountain trip up about Linville and that vicinity. Rev. and Mrs. 'Shuler Peeler of the First Reformed church, arrived home Saturday after a month's absence. Mr. and Mrs. Peeler spent part of the time at Blowing Rock and elsewhere in the mountains, then visited relatives in China Grove and vicinity. Mr. Peeler will occupy his pulpit Sunday as usual. Dr. W. M. Scruggs is back from a trip to Asheville and Black Mountain. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Ross are at Blue Ridge. They will be absent a week or ten days. Rev.
