STATESVILLE TO
HAVE DAY HERE
Will Run Special Train to
the Exposition on Septem
ber 15.
Statesville, Sept. 7 Thursday, Sep
tember 15, has been designated as
"Statesville Day" at the Made-in-Caro-Y
1 i ii i "IT v I x i i i i i i .
lotte on September 12-29. This was de
cided on at an open meeting of the
Statesville Chamber of Commerce,
which was attended by citizens repre
senting the varied interests of the citv.
It was an enthusiastic gathering or
Statesville's most progressive and en
terprising business men and there was
not a discordant note in the full und
free discussion of the matter of takin.-j
an active interest in showing the won
derful advantages and achievements of
Statesville as an industrial center.
C. H. Turner, president of the Cham
ber of Commerce, opened the meeting
with a brief, pointed address in which
he pointed out the importance of hav
ing a "Statesville Day" at the Made-in-Carolina
Exposition in Charlotte. He
stated that Statesville had already en
gaged more space at the exposition an 1
had a ore diversified exhibit than
any other town ot the size in the fctate.
Alany people in Statesville are no'
aware of what is made here and an
exhibit will be a revelation to them
Cnpt. "V. J. Squire, of Charlotte, wus
present and made a comprehensive ad
dress with reference to the purposes
and plans of the exposition manage
ment. It is purely educational and will
be of untold benefit in showing to our
home people what is being accomplisn
ed in the industrial line by our home
enterprises. Captain Squire made a
number of practical suggestions wth
reference to having a speaker for the
occasion, getting special train, ecz ,
which were accepted by the organize
tion.
J. Paul Leonard, secretary of the
State Merchants' Association, who has
recently been touring the State, stated
wherever he had been the people were
talking the exposition and were com
ing to Charlotte. He urged the impoi
tance of "Statesville Day."
Sirpt. R. ?.r. Gray, of the StatesvMle
graded schools, spoke highly of th?
matter and suggested that he thought
it would be of gre'at educational valu
to his high school pupils to take them.
The suggestion was most enthusiastic?.1
ly received by members of the Chamber
of Commerce and it was unanimously
agreed to -. have the high school stu
dents attend the exposition in a body
there will be nearly two hundred of
the. Other business men making ad
dresses were D. M. Ausley, C. V. Ht.i
kel. C. E. Keiger, J. G. Shelton. F. A.
Sherrill. W. Hi Morrison. A. W. Bunch.
Governor V. D. Turner was extend
ed the honor of an invitation to be the
speaker of the day. He accepted and
his address will be a feature of the oc
casion. A special train will be run from
Statesville to Charlotte, and it is nosr
estimated that there will be possiblv
one thousand people who will attend.
The Rotary Club, Merchants' Assooiar
tion and the various organizations of
Statesville will heartily join in he
movement for making "Statesvilte
Day" a great success.
The committee appointed by Presi
dent C. H. Turner to complete ar
rangements for the occasion is om
posed of the following: W. H. Morri.-on,
A. W. Bunch. A. B. Johnston. Frank
Johnson, R. M. Gray, J. G. Shelton, C.
E. Keiger, F. A. Sherrill, Mayor L. B.
Bristol.
Following are the exhibitors who will
be represented at the exposition: C. H.
Turner, who will show pony saw mills
5n operation; Statesville Flour Mill will
bake bread from the home product:

tween Pacific and Atlantic coasts

CELEBRATION ON
BOONE JHGHWAY
Wilkes and Watauga Coun
ties to be Hosts at Deep
Gap Event.
North "Wilkesboro, Sept. 7. Weather
conditions permitting, Deep Gap,, na
ture's gateway through Blue Ridye
mountains, is going to be the scene
of a great occasion on Thursday, Sep
tember 8, when ' the counties of Wilkes
and Watauga are hosts at a celebra
tion heralding the fact that the grad
ing of the Boone Trail Highway has
been completed between North Wilkes
boro and the Tennessee line. The cele
bratiofi will be featured by a barbecu?
and picnic dinner, and speeches by
prominent citizens of various sections
of the State.
A committee has made a tour of
the highway and a place suitable for
holding the celebration has been lo
cated on the highway, 30 miles dis
tant from this city. Unless l-ains fall
in this section the highway can be
traveled from Winston-Salem, Char
lotte, Statesville and other points i
without any trouble. Some sections
of the road may be found to be slight
ly rough, but the trip can be made
without damage to cars. A large num
ber of Winston-Salem people will be !
present Thursday and many people of
other places are expected to be found
in the Gap on that day. People here
arc very enthusiastic over the fa?t
one of the "Lost Provinces" has in:
outlet, and it is encouraging to knew
that a portion of the highway is al
ready receiving a coat of gravel.
In 1S51 a dommittee was appointed
by the legislature of North Carolina
to make an inspection of the Blue
Ridge range for the purpose of locat
ing the most practical route for build
ing a highway across the mountains.
This committee reported favorably on
Deep Gap. In 163 a bill was passed
by the Legislature ordering a surve,
and State funds were spent on a high
way leading from this city via Hol
man's Ford to Trades Tenn., the con
struction work beginning at the Ten
nessee line and extending into Watau
go counts'. For some reason- the
work was discontinued before the proj
ect was completed. The heaviest
grade on the highway east of Boone
is 4.12 per cent, and there are no dan
gerous curves.
A general invitation is extended by
the Wilkes Commercial Club to peoole
of the Piedmont and Western Noi'.n
Carolina to take part in celebrating the
completion of the grading of one of
the main highways in the State.
ANSWERED LETTERS.
. Mazie;; Mrs. T. I. K.; Mrs. Mc. To
eradicate lines and keep the muscles
from sagging, give the skin this treat
ment twice each week. Massage a
cleansing cream into the skin and re
move with hot moist cloth. Paint It
all over with an astringent and lie
down for 20 minutes while it draws up
the skin. Remove with warm moist
cloth. Massage again, but use a fine

will cure it, except keeping your liver
active and the stomach sweet.
R". H. S. From one of the readers,
comes this suggestion. She says she
took the curl from her hair by rubbing
the rcalp with a solution of JBoracic
Acid and water. She did this before
shampooing the head and she claims
that it not only took all the kink from
her hair, but it also cured her of dand

cleansing, so you are perfectly safe in
