ANNIVERSARY OF
DANTE HONORED
i
Catholic Schools and Col
leges Commemorate 600th
Anniversary of Poet.
Rom, Sept. 14. Catholics through
out the world today, especially in their
schools, colleges and universities, are
commemorating1 the 600th anniversary
of the death of Dante Alighieri, the
' great Florentine poet and "father of
; the Italian language," in accordance
with the encyclical of Pope Benedict
issued last May.
The Pontiff in his address quoted
many pasages from Dants as confirm
ing: the Catholic doctrine and as show
ing; how profound was hi3 respect for
the teachings of the church and its
authority. In concluding he proclaim
ed Dante as "the greatest singer of th
Christian truth" and invited all schol
ars to study his works in the same
Christian spirit as thpy were written.
The divine poet of Christendom, he said
"sang In divine accent those Christian
ideals which he admired in all the vigor
of their beauty."
In anticipation of the sex-centenary
of Dante's death the government of
Italy recently authorized the expendi
ture of 2,000.000 lire for the publication
of a new edition of his works and for
the restoration of the Baptistry of
Florence. For a number of months
Catholic scholars have .been renewing
their acquaintanceship with "The Di
vine Comedy," "Vita i Nuova," "De
Monarchia," "Convlto," "de Vulgari
Eloquentia," "Eclogues," "de Aqua et
Terra," and his "Letters."
Dante, in Italy, is almost a national
deity. So far Js this adoration carried
that some years ago, when Sir Henry
Irving gave his drama which had Dante
as its hero, the Italians rose as one
man to protest against the desecration
of their idol. In the historic house and
tower which the Count Anguillara built
in the 12th century and which was
frequented bv Dante, lectures by fa
mous students of the great poet's life
and works have been given in recent
years.

ance laws. These specifically name
pitching quoits as unlawful.
Discussion in city council developed
that manv of the city fathers did not
know what a pair of quoits looked like,
while City Commissioner John Wright
confessed" to being the premier horse
shoe pitcher in Lincoln.

WHY CHURCHES
ARE DESERTED
Preacher Discusses Reasons
For the Failure of Peo ple
to Attend.
Ijondon, Sept. 34. Modern minister;?
are trained as mere "salesmen" in
stead of Christian apostles and that is
one reason why the people generally
have a luke-warm attitude toward re
ligion, declared the Rev. Dr. J- S. 1vj.M
Thomas of Chicago, in an address here
today before the Ecumenical Methodist
Conference. The speaker said he saw
"a real peril" in the effort of denom
inational leaders to force the ministry
into a narrow and mechanical scheme
whose direct aim is to produce the larg
est immediate revenue.
"Poorly attended churches all over
the land bear witness to the people's
indifference toward institutional reli
gion," said Dr. Thomas. "Full churches
are the exception rather' than the rule.
It is the empty church which scares us
in the face and, 'more eloquently Uu;n
words' speaks of the attitude of that
large group of people who have rejected
institutional religion as something un
necessary in their lives.
"They are pleasure mad; they hava a
mania for materialistic indulgence,
while their belief in the modern church
as the representative of God and the
Ambassador of Christ does not express
itself- The real problem," the speaker
indicated, "is how to vitalize the church
so that she may authoritatively and
convincingly persuade men of their di
vine Inheritance and the mission of sac
rifical service." Asserting that "the
averitge artisan lacks confidence in the.
ctiurch as the champion of the 'square
deal,' " he continued:
"This indifference has arisen from
a misconception of God a wrong tfajh
ir.g of God a wrong teachiiiy of the
church and a wrong teaching of the
Christian life. l:i many of the critical
hours of history the i.-hurcii hiiii failed
to impress the world with a i authori
tative message which would bring light
into the dark hours on i'a? s ibjeet of
war, the relations of capital sir.il labor
and other 'ital quest Lons which have
been baffling the minds of men."
"Prophets and priests." Dr. Thomas
said, must "challenge the people with
a gospel that will restr,ri on fide nee in
the church, trust in Christ anl service
to the world. Th- church must not
forget her social message 'ut she rm:st
also remember ih.it Christianity is a
religion of the individual. "'
REMEMBERS RIDE ON
OLD CLINTON TRAIN
Lansing. Mich., Sept. 14. The tour
of the Dewitt Clinton (X. Y. C.) train
through Michigan brought to light that
this state can claim first honors in the
matter of having among its residents
first passengers of the old pioneer of
the twentieth century limited.
Mrs. Maryanne Mann, 90, Grand
Rapids, claims to be the only living
woman who rode on the train during
its period of operation. She was en
thusiastic in describing her experiences
when the train visited her locality,
claiming it was "unsafe" for children:
Despite her assertion, John T. Ber.
ner, 96, Marshall, claimed to be the
only living person who made the initial
trip with the train, says he found rid
ing comfortable at the age of 6, when
his father, the conductor of the train,
took him on the first journey. Berner
was wheeled to the station at Marshall
to view the old Dewitt Clinton on her
exhibition trip through the state.
SQUIRREL ISLAND WAS
FIRST OF COLONIES
Squirrel Island, Me., Sept. 14. Fifty
years ago twenty men bought this is
land for a retreat from city ife in the
hot months of the year, formed a com
munity and gave it religion and a local
government.
Now their children are celebrating
the golden jubilee of the establishment
of the Maine summer colony k?a. They
declare that while summer homes had
dotted the coast of Maine before '1871,
it was the success of the Squirrel Is
land Community that led to the found
ing of other colonies all the way from
Kittery to Sorrento.
Founded for freedom and fun modi
fied by church and village regulation,
the Squirrel Island Association was
from the first on a basis of sex equality.
