t nker Stone' I Uc2f-S!W, byCarlysle H. TINKER BOB MEETS .When Tinker Bob heard the quack ing like the sound of ducks he toli Silky and Major Pole Cat to be very quiet, as they crept to the edge of tne water, lest the strange fishermen shouU hear them and fly away. Without spy ing a word they wanted carefully to ward the fishing place. The sowil was very peculiar It was like a duck's quack and yet it wasn't. "Look there," whispered the King. "Why there are a dozen or more of those creatures fishing and they seem to be getting something. I wonder how they see in the twilight? I say they must have powerful eyes. As loner as I have been King of the Forest I have . never seen such creatures as these about before." They were members of the bird fam ily but, like Long Neck, they had ex tra long legs and walked about in the water. Now and then they would thrust their bonds under the water an! seldom did they lift them up without, some kind of a catch in their biits. Thev each had a black spot on then heads and also a patch of black on their wings with a white stripe run ning right through the middle cf their backs. , Their bills were long and brown and sharp, and Tinker Bob didn't know who they were. "Now." said the King. "I am going to find out who these fellows are. Thev seem to be content here fishing in the dusk of the day and they are catchm? more fish than any of the fishermen of the daytime." The only way that Tinker Bob could find out about them was to tap th? Stones together. If he had walked up to them without the Creature of His Desire carrying him they would have been frightened and he might nevtr have seen them again. So he alway3 considered the Seven Magic Stones o5 fore he took any action. The Stone he wanted was the one thnt would make them understand that no one was go ing to do them harm. He took the White Stone from his pocket and tap ped it against the Stone of Knowledge and the Creature of His Desire was by 0 feS5IffiMa!Il j A NERVOUS SPEAKER. J he other night I saw !A street corner speaker And he was making a speech From a taxicab. He was standing n the back seat of the cab, But he appeared to be nervous. Then looked at the speaker, Then turned his attention Again to his cigarette. Then they would both look At their watches again, rAnd the speaker would go on 'With his speech, but I noticed :That every time the driver Looked at his watch the speaker Seemed to grow more nervous. Finally he quit cold and told Th driver to start his engine And drive him out of there. I believe it would be A good thing to have All speeches made .From tacicabs where the Charge is so much and ;,The driver keeps tab. Instantly Tinker Bob stood ii the Basket it seemed to be floating on the water beside one of the birds wno was fishing. "I am the King of the Forest, said he. "now tell me. who are you?" The fisherman hearing this voice was surprised at first but did not move out of his steps. Looking up he saw the King bv his side. "You startled me so I cannot think what to say. Why I am the leader of this flock of fishers. I have seen you many times but you never saw me before. My name is Blackv. They call me the Night He ron." Presently Tinker Bob was surrounl ed with creatures anxiously looking up at him. Tomorrow we will see what they wanted. Nevt The King Bids Them Good Night. Dear Wife: I know you are having a perfectly lovely time out there in Michigan and so I do not want to urge you to return to New York until rou get ready, but, whatever you do. don't haul off and return home without letting me know a couple of days in advance. You know. I have been sleeping in all the beds during the three months you and the kids have been away, but I found the kids' beds a bit short and had to put a chair at the foot of them and push my feet through the foot of the bed and rest them on the chair. I believe I put it in the paper that Annette Kellermann, your goldfish, is dead, which is the only tragedy we hsve had. I have not been feeling so good, myself, but it is nothing serious and you needn't hurry home on that account- I hope you received that ten bucks I sent you in July and if you should need any more I hope you will let me know. It has been very lonesom,e, but don't hurry home for that reason. I have swept the apart ment out once since you went away in June and it looks pretty clean. I will have somebody come in and wash up the dishes before you get back. They all have eggs in 'cm and eggs are hard to get off. I have eaten so many eggs I haven't tne heart to look a chicken in the face. I You know I never looked at 'cm ; much, anyhow, especially when you was along. Well, have a good time, j If you need any mere than that ten i tucks I sent you in July, be sure and mention it. Write, don't wire. K. K. M. THE SIMPLE LITE. V. S. P. AUNTIE'S WEDDING GOWN'. (By Hattie Lanning.) Hidden away up stairs in the old gar ret, Lays auntie's wedding gown it lays in the old chest, She takes it from its resting place, iioth eaten and laden with the odor of orange blossoms, As she gazes on the silken masses, Memories of the past and what might have been, Her mind wanders back To the day she was to have been his happy bi-ide, But another claimed him for their own, And so she unfolds and refolds the faded treasure And I hear a sigh as she lays it back in the old chest. It's easy to get laughed at; quite another to be funny. Mabel:. The doctor says he has saved her life nine times. Eva: I always did think she was a cat. Life's darkest, moment to the poor mother who has baked biscuits and prepared the lunch for the picnic is when the rain begins to fall just as she is prepared to spread the feast. HOW ABOUT THE BOARDING HOUSE REACH. You've got to hold your own if you take even a soft drink in Wisconsin where the courts have ruled that all drinking must be done without the aid of a footrail and too far from the counter to set a glass on it. Long after she got into bed on the "night of the party, Cherry lay awake, thinking over the events of the past few hours. And long after he got into bed, Ned did likewise. He .was gone an hour and over with that Bates girl, Cherry reflected bitter ly. They had much to discuss, to be sure, those days of the past. Possibly they held a glamor now that they were past. Too often their eyes held mutual reminiscences. Here, the greeneyed monster led Cherry even farther into troubled waters. Maybe Ned was sorry for breaking off with Arline, as he had done, for his marraige with a girl like herself? A hundred and one ifs and maybes assailed the unhappy bride, long af ter she heard her husband's regular breathing denoting peaceful slumber. Ned on his part was strangely dis turbed by what had passed between Arline and hirrfself, evem though he had immediately regretted beyond words his rashness in allowing his jealousy to reopen old gates and memories. A true-blue wife wouldn't let another man kiss her, he argued tensely, es pecially if the other was his friend. Friend! Fine, fine friend, Arthur Ham len. The old antagonism of years flam ed up within him stronger than ever. Arthur had been insolent as a boy, and now he ha ddeveloped into a bounder of the first water. That house ' o' dreams must be built quickly if there was to be any real future for Cherry and himself. No one knew this better than the unhappy Ned. The young couple had been ominous ly silent, and studiedly polite when they had met in their room at the end of the evening's fun. Not by the flicker of an eyelash had either one betrayed his true feelings to the other. Most dang erous moments cf all, these tensely, in articulate ones, in married life. il When you patronize a bank you do that bank a favor and you are entitled to every courtesy and consideration at the hands of its officers and employees.
