SPARTANS SPLIT WITH THE PALS Drake Ineffective in First innings, But Hill Stop ped Charleston. Snartanburg. S. C Sept. 22. The Spartans divided a doublt-header with Charleston Wednesday afternoon, los ing the first 4 and 3 and capturing the last game 3 and 1. Drake was ineffec tive in the first and third innings of the matinee, but thereafter he tight ened up and allowed only one other hit. Lansing had to leave the mound in the ninth inning, the Spartans crawl ing on him for two runs which put them one short of a tie, but Lefty Townsend hurried to the hill and p.i: an end to the rally. The second game was featured by the effective pitching of Hill. The fielding of Achinger and Bridwell stood out prominently. There never was a time in the whole history of boxing when the men of that profession were so bad as tnc are today. At present there are two really good champions Jack Dempsey, King ui heavies, and Benny Leonard, king oi the 135-pounders. The rest you can toss into the ash can. . . There are other fairly good titlericiu ers, but the writer can't class them with the champs of other days. And when one stops to think f .he fortunes they get in purses these days, it almost knocks you silly. Think or a ham and egg fighter like Johnny Wilson getting $37,500 to box anotner ham and eee fiehter, Bryan Downey. Wilson's end would be a fortune tor the ordinary man. It is more than he could earn in a lifetime, yet the cheese champion slaps hi 3 way through 12 rounds of boxing ?nd picks up tho change. Tex Rickard isn't to blame.
