Vincenzo Cosmano, Union presi dent and protege of Murphy; Edward Geirum. alleged driver of the bandit's car, and Paul Volanti also were con victed. Nearly all the loot was recovered by postal inspectors in a trunk in the gar ret at the home of Murphy's father-! in-law, who. with several other defend ants, is awaiting trial. Alurphy, a "back of the yards" product ! witn a spectacular career in gang, union and political circles, was arrested with Sosmano and several others last year charged with the murder of "Mossy" Enright, known as the "King of the Gunmen". After several months in jail, they were released when im portant State's witnesses could not be found. Murphy was convicted on two counts of conspiracy 'to rob the mail. Each count carries a maximum penalty of two-years' imprisonment and 530.000 fine. Cosmano and Geirum were founi guilty on the conspiracy . charge also. A charge of robbing the mails was not sustained by the jury. Murphy and Volanti were the defend ants named in the conviction on the charge of knowingly possessing stolen Government property. The punishment is similar to that of the conspiracy charge. Immediately after the jury had re turned its verdict, attorney:! for the convicted men entered separate mo tions for retrial. All the defendants were allowed to leave the courtroom on their present bonds until next Mon day, yhen Judge Eandis will hear the motions. S. C. Nov. 10. Announce ment is made here today of the organi zation, now under way. of a new na tional bank for Columbia. The bank will be successor to the Bank of Colum bia, which will pass out of existence. The announcement is made by W. A. Coleman, president of the Bank of Co lumbia. The new bank will be capitalized at two hundred thousand dollars. The Bank of Columbia, which will pass in a few days, is one of the oldest banks of the State and was considered until recently one of the strongest State banks in the State.
