The regular monthly meeting Of the American "War Mothers was held in the parlors of the Second Presbyterian church on Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Mrs. Hugh Montgomery, pres ident, presided. It was voted to make all Gold Star Mothers of the county honorary mem bers of the organization. A report from Greenville, S. C. show ed that there were 33 North Carolina boys in Public Health Hospital 26, six of these being from Charlotte, and four of whom are without compensation. Immediate ste?.; will be taken to supply the, needs of these men. There are at Oteen 227 men who are not receiving any compensation, some who get very little and in man . cases these have families. Twelve sleeping caps were sent to the Orthopedic hospital at Gastonia during the month, and an equal number of bathrobes will be sent to the chil dren this month. Seven hundred and two victrola rec ords were given by the Mothers in a record shower, these to be divided be tween Greenville and Oteen. . .' It was learned that several ex-service men have died in the various parts of the city within the past few weeks. The American War Mothers will pro vide an American flag to enfold each casket and in the future a committee will attend the funerals of all men who gave their lives in the world war. Notwithstanding the report from a "special committee" that the conditions at the County jail are satisfactory in all respects, a committee composed of Mrs: Montgomery. Mrs. E. P. Tingley, Mrs. W. Frank Dowd. Mrs. Heriot Clarkson, Mrs. R. J. Walker, Mrs. R. J. Sifford . and Mrs. J. Warren Roark will visit the county commissioners at their De cember meeting and ask for a waiting room to be provided for relatives of prisoners, that they may no longer be forced to stand outside in the weather as they have been doing- in years past. This committee will also investigate treatment of the prisoners and the un fortunate relatives who must visit them. The American War Mothers, assisted by the American legion, will give their second annual ball in the city auditor ium on January 19th. Lee-Jackson Day, the proceeds to go to tubercular men in the various hospitals. In Honor of Miss Stegall. Miss Janie Matthews was hostess at a-luncheon at the Pol.yanna Cafeteria Saturday at 2 o'clock in honor of her cousin. Miss Virginia Stegall, of Fay etteville, W. Va., who is visiting rela tives in the city and who at present is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Vann Mat thews' in the Elmore apartment. Th2 honoree, who is exceptionally pretty and attractive, wore a frock of blue georgette, a picture hat, and a corsage of sweetheart roses. A massive basket filled with large yellow chrysanthemums filled the center of the table, and running from this to each, end of the table were garlands of 'asparagus ferns, intermingled with small yellow chrysanthemums. The place-cards were yellow, as were the little baskets filled with salted nuts. A five-course luncheon was served. Completely taking even the imme diate members of their families by surprise, Joseph Westmoreland, of Charlotte, and Miss Ruth Price Mat thews, daughter of W. R. Matthews, 506 West Trade street, were arried Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock by Rev. J. A. Sharp, pastor of Calvary Methodist church, at the pastor's home. Helms will hear with interest of her marriage to Arthur Eite. the wedding taking place in Holy Trinity Cathe dral, Shanghai, China, on November 16. Miss Helms has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Linn in Shanghai since September 30. Ths bride is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Helms, of this city. She is bright and accomplished and is very popular in this city and Greensboro, her former home. Mr. Eite is from Nottingham. Eng., but has made -his home in China for the past ten years, where he is a rep resentative of the British-American To bacco Company. The second dance will take place in the city auditorium, and the Merry makers wil play. Sorosis to Meet in Honor Of Mrs. Adams. Sorosis will be entertained Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by Mrs, J. D. Ball at her home on Tenth avenue, in honor of her house-guest, Mrs. H. L. Adams, .of Anderson, S. C, for years a member of the club. Mrs. Ball is entertaining the. club for Mrs.' H. L. McClaren. who was to have been hostess at this meeting, but who was called out of town. Card Party at Woman's Club. The regular weekly card-party at the Woman's Club, for the benefit of the club, will be given Wednesday af ternoon at 3:30 o'clock. An attractive event in . golf circles was the dinner party given ft the Charlotte Country Club last evening by a member of the club and a golf enthusiast, who had promised a din ner to the winner of the Fall cham pionship and to the three winners in the semi-finals. Miss Edna Hirshinger won the cham pionship, and the winners in the semi finals were Mr. and Mrs. Gaston G. Galloway, Mr. and Mrs. E. PK Coles, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse M. Oldham.
