Boulevard. Phones 4092-4533 D DAVIS BROTHERS (Continued from Pace One.) broken bottles and that its odor was easily detectible. The car was admitted by these State witnesses to be in bad running shape. Three tires were off as many wheels and It was developed from their testimony that before they could move the automobile to the city with its precious,, cargo, it was neces sary to telephone into a local vulcaniz ing p?ant and get the tires-sent oit there. . ;.- It' was also " in evidence ; that oh the property ... of G. ,;C. Davis, in his barn, throe miles away, was another large touring car cohtaining approximately the same amount of the some sort of whiskey, the State contending that both cars contained allotments ; from the same original cargo and were intended for the same distribution. The defense was not as clearly and perceptibly able to explain the presence of this car in Mr. Davis' barn as to prove .why . the other car was in the barn of D. W. Davis, but the defendant himself said that it had been driven into the barn by strangers in his absence, the drivers asking for the privilege of keeping it there until they returned. Mr. Davis said that he had made no personal in spection of the machine and knew noth ing of its probable , contents until offi cers came out and got it, CHARACTER OF MEN. The defense was able to' introduce many witnesses to testify to the good character of . the defendants and it was the comment around the courthouse during the afternoon that the evidence of the good character of the defendants hadi furnished the avenue of escape and acquittal for them. Some, of the best citizens of that section of the coun ty testified that, the character of . the men was good, and witnesses against them testified that, insofar as truth and honesty were concerned, the de fendants bore an unchallenged reputa tion. Their testimony as to their char acter had to do with reports in the neighborhood that they had been sell ing whiskey about their place. The case was one of the most inter esting and sensational tried in Superior court in many months. The nature of the testimony as well as the standing of the defendants in their community added zest to thte trial which was at tended by a throng of spectators from beginning to end.
