"As our standing army goes down
in numbers," he continued, 't'he en

led to the foundation of the academy;
was the desire to have a nucleus to
train the great body of our citizens 'in
time of emergency, rather than to be
forced to keep larsreb odies of men con
tinually under arms. Over a fpn fin-v
ago, with a, population of scarcelv
more than 5.000,000. the American
Government authorized a cadet corps
of oval- 250. Today, with that popula
tion increased twenty fold, the number
of cadets in training is scarcely four
times the original number authorized.

last Wednesday in the way of a family

him in that pleasant way lasst Monday
at their home on Dover, street. The

and smal son. Master James, Miss Nan
nie Forest and Mr. and Mrs. Motte

The revival meeting which began last
week at the Baptist church here is
gorwing in interest and attendance.
Rev. Mr. Black, the evangelist, con
ducts two services each day and a large
crowd particularly attend the evening
services attest the deep interest his
fine sermons have awakened. Last Sun

a growing attendance. The meeting
will continue several days longer, prob

The Ladies Aid and Missionary Soci

X
The annual thanks-offerings are given
in November, but as several members
were absent last month, who were pres
ent on this occasion, the sum was ma
terially increased, and will be forvvarded
to the orphanage at Barium Springs be
fore Christmas. A nice sum, about $50,
was given by the Society to the Manse
fund. After the regular routine of bus
iness was completed, Mrs. Garrison in
vited her guests to the dining room,
which was gay with the Christmas col
ors. The long table was lovely with, its
centre piece of bright red flowers, and
the daintiest refreshments were served.
The occasion was mucti enjoyed and the
Pineville contingent had such a good
time that they arrived at their homes
after the "going down of.the sun," and
had to hurry to et to church.
The Persians have a different name
for each day of the month.
