CONTRACTS ARE GIVEN FOR DAMS Southern Power Company! Awards Jobs of Con structing Power Plants. Contracts for the excavation and ma sonry work o the new hydro-electric station at Mountain Island, on the Ca tawba river, and for the new hydro electric plant to be constructed at Great Falls, S. C. also on the Catawba, were let Thursday night by officials of the Southern Power Company, following a conference with building contractors who came here to bid for the work . Ehinehart & Dennis, contractors of ChEflottesville. Va-., were the successful bidders for the Mountain Island station, which is to be so constructed as to gen erate 80.000 hcrse-power of hydro-electrical ercrygy. The contract was let by the Catawba Manufacturing & Elec tric Power Company, one of the sub sidiary organizations of the Southern Power Company. The contract calls for the removal of earth, the placing ot ce ment and other preliminaries incident to a lull contract, inclunding' the steel work and machinery placiner. The Plant wil be located on Mountain Island, three miles above Mt. Holly, on the Catawba river. The building of a three-mile spur track of railway from the Piedmont & Northern track to the nearest point adjacent to the p'ant site will be one of the preliminaries. It is expected the plant, can be completed in about two years. Tho contract for erecting the new power plant at. Great Falls was let by the Great Falls Power Company, also a subsidiary of the Southern Power Company, to Scott. Stewart & Jones, contractors of Greenville. S. C, and Rock Hill, S. C. This contract includes the construction of the power ' house, with the necessary excavation, and the erection of steel work and machinery. The Dearborn station will be located Just across the river from the present Great Falls station. The new station is expected to generate 60,000 horse power; of electrical' energy, A spur track of railway has been constructed to the site of the new plant and work can begin at once. No estimate of what the completed power plants will cost was given out. The addition of the proposed output of 140.000 horse-power from the two new plants adds another chapter in the his tory of the development of hydro-electric power that has been one of the fea tures of the iniustrial renaissance in 1he South, Vith the Southern Power Company playing a leading role.
