STATE'S CASE TO
BE ENDED TODAY
Eastlake Defense Expected
to Begin Presentation of
Its Witnesses.
Montross, Va., Dec. IS. Only two or
three witnesses rer- '.i.id to be pre
sented by the prosec. lion today at .the
"trial in the counyt circuit court here
of Roger D. Eastlae, naval petty offi
cer, charged jointly with Miss Saran
Knox, Baltimore nurse, with, the mur
der of his wife, Margaret at their
Colonial Beach home on September
30.
It was expected the defense would
open its case the latter part of the
day. It appears from this that the
prosecution has decided not to present
as witnesses Eastlake's two . children,
aged 9 and 5, who gave what was
regarded as important testimony before
th: coroner's jury wheih indicted th?
accused couple. . . j
Among the witnesses heard yester
day. Richard Tate, of Colonial Beac'i.
testified that he rented a house tn
Eastlake at that place some mont'n.
before the murder, which the latter
represented as desiring for his "aunt,"
but which was occupied by Miss Knox.
The witness said that, after the first
month, Miss Knox paid the rent for
the house, to which, he further testi
fied. Eastlake was a frequent visitor,
being in the habit, he said, of spending
every Tuesday night there.
E. Paul Drinks, an engineer, and
F. S. Fitzhugh, undertaker testifio I
to observing bruises on Mrs. Eastlake's
arms after the murder, a point on
which the prosecution aparently placed
much importance with the evident
purpose of showing whether the slain
woman had been held by one person
while another delivered the fatal blows.
Dr. John Duff Jr., physician at Dahl
gren proving grouTids, later testified,
however, that he observed no bruises
cn Mrs. Eastlake's arms when he ex
amined the body.
