north, and from the Andes to the At-;

The first ash clouds reached the
City of La Pitta, 35 miles southeast of
this city, at 5 o'clock yesterday after
noon. Weathtr Bureau observers also
reported a slight film of dust over
Buenos Aires although it was not no
ticed 'jv the inhabitants. Volcanic, dust
becomes finer as the distance from its
origin increases. ,
In the town of Lincoln, 200 miles i
west of here, fine ashes fell yesterday J
afternoon, the sun was ooscurea oy
clouds resembling a fog and objects
700 fe2t away were invisible. No alarm
is felt in this section, as the fall has
not bean heavy enough to do any dant

TAX ON GINS NOW
NO LONGER EXISTS
The 25 cent tax on - erey bale of
cotton ginned in North Carolina, im
posed by an act passed by the Gen
eral Assembly four years ago, has
been repealed by the present called ,
session of the General Assembly.. j

that the law has been in effect a fund
of about $500,000 has accrued, ac
cording to the information 1 from llal

building warehouses in the State, tlvi
various counties in the State to have
the right of borrowing from the fund
at fixed interest rates to build with it.
The fund from the cotton bale tax
has aggregated about $24,000 in
Mecklenburg county, but none of it
has been expended in the county io

collected by the State have been used,
it is understood.
