"Not long- ago a man came into my , office and told me that a creditor was pressing him for a debt," began Mr, j Terence. "He declared that the fellow had a mortgage on his property and that he couldn't rake up enough cash to meet the debt. If the fellow would discount his note, however, he might be able to meet it Immediately. He, offered me a good fee if I could pre vail on his creditor to do this. "But the creditor was in a bad hu mor and wanted full payment of the note at once. No manner of diplo macy could make him knock, off some of the principal for a cash payment. I left with a sense of defeat. "It was the next day that I acci dentally learned that this fellow was deeply in debt to another. A wild idea then entered my head and I decided to try a novel scheme for the fun in it if nothing else. I told my client to hold his horses for a day or so while I con ducted a little private investigation. j "The upshot of it was that I dis covered four men in a chain of debt, so to snpak. One owed another, he I owed a third and he a fourth, all pretty near the same amount. So I took tho bull by the tail and called on the fourth fellow. After some talk I persuaded I him to push his debtor for payment j and grant a discount for cash pay-' ment. The natural result was that this debtor, in turn, began to push the fellow who owed him. At this point I again stepped in and arranged a dis count I'or cash payment. "This third man was my client's I creditor and in order to meet the de ! mands made on him he at once called I me up and told me he had decided to grant a discount if my client would pay him cash This was 'xactly what I was looking for and the deal Avas : accordingly closed. ! "The final result was that I got ' three fees out of this peculiar arrange ment md a nighty good laugh." GOVERNOR SELLS PAPERS j "Detroit. Dec. 21.
