On the occasion of his visit t.:
Charlotte during the week, Rev. C. E.
Raynal, pastor of the First Presbyte
rian church of Statesville and former
pastor of a Presbyterian church of
Charlotte, was exhibiting some sampled
of his handiwrok in wood-making.
They were two serving trays and
several judges of this class of crafts
manship declared them to be the most
beautiful examples of fine woodworking
that they had ever seen.
One of these trays, the larger one.
was composed of 276 separate and
distinct pieces. The body of the tray
was made of lirododendron, commonly
kr.own as curly poplar. This wood was
cut in 1880 on Snow Bird Mountain,
this satte, and has been exhibited at
the St. Louis and several other world'.-
fairs. The border of the tray is mad
of walnut, holly, ebony, box, degama,
curly maple and bullet woods. The
tray ia the original design of Mr.
Raynal and the craftsmanship dis
played and inlay is really quite mar
velous. One connoisseur who examined this
try on Saturday at the Ivey depart
ment store where it is on ' displav
remarked that he had observed this
same class of woodwork shown in the
exclusive art craft shops in New York
and. priced at from $200 to $300.
inquiry has brought out the fact thaf
Mr. Raynal has in his workshop behind
his Statesville parsonage, about as fine
a collection of rare woods as may be
found anywhere, but he is exceedinglv
ar.xious to have - it understood that
woodworking si simply a side hobby
with him and that preaching is his
regular business. Mr. Raynal declares
that he prefers it to golf, fishing cr
hunting, and finds, a trreat deal moiv
delight and satisfaction in it.

MAIL BUSINESS AT
OFFICE INCREASES
The pre-Chrlstmaa rush at the Char-
lotto postoffice indicates that there is
no lessening of the volume of Christ
mas greetings in the shape of letters
and packages over any other years.
Business during the past few days in
dicates, according to figures given out
by Assistant Postmaster W. B. Brad
ford that there is no decrease in post
al activity, usually taken as a accurate
indication of business conditions.
A gain of nearly 30 per cent in stamp
sales for the first four days of this
week ever corresponding days of the
same week last Christmas is one of the
facts noted at the office. On Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the
stamp sales amounted to $10,161.54, a
compa.-ed with $7,961.49 for the same
period of last year. On Thursday the
highest number of pieces of mail that
ever oassed through Charlotte postof
fice in one day were handled.
Thero has been no congestion, how
ever, in the office because of the fact
that 25 new clerks have been added
for the holidays and a dozen extra
carriers put on to help deliver Christ
mas goods into Charlotte homes. Two
new vircel post delivery trucks have
also been added, making a total of
seven delivery trucks now delivering
parcels.
All the mail received in the rvfficn nn
to 9 o'clock each night is handled and
made ready for early delivery next
morning and all mail receiver? dnHntr
the day is delivered before night.
Parcels post windows have remained
opened until 9 o'clock each nieht.
