f ' THURSDAY MAN ORDERED TO, TAKE WIFE BACK Birmingham Attorney Beat en Until Blood Streamed from Lacerations. Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 29. City and county authorities had made little headway, they reported today, in an ef fort to run down members of a mask ed mob, who lured W. E. Tumlin, well known Birmingham attorney, to Red mountain Tuesday night and beat mm vintil olood streamed from a score of lacerations on his body. Tumlin was enticed from his office by a youth, who pretended that the lawyer was -wanted by a patient in a Red Mountain sanitarium to draw up a will. "When he had reached a lonely spot in the hills, Tumlin reported to Solicitor Tate, he was seized by mask ed men, who bound and gagged him. The lawyer reported to Solicitor Tate that he was told he must promise to remarry his divorced wife, or death would be immediately inflicted. He re fused to make such promise, accord ing to his report to the prosecuting attorney, and t'he mob set upon him with laths. After the beating, the members of the mob departed, leaving him too weak to walk for some time. He finally found his way back to a telephone, where he summoned aid. As soon as he was able yesterday he re ported the matter to the authorities. Records in the chancery division of the Circuit Court showed that, on Oc tober 19, 1921, a decree of absolute di vorce was granted Tumlin on the grounds of cruelty and voluntary abandonment.
