In the confusion attending the
. swearing in of the two Montana Sen
ators on Thursday the fact escaped
";. notice that two Republican Senators
refused to. assist Senator Hoar In
aiding Messrs. Banders and Power to
the membership of the Senate. The
deserters were Senators Plumb 'and
. Wolcott, who were conveniently ab-
' sent when the vote was taken. Mr,
Wolcott was purposely out of the
building, but Mr. Plumb was not
. He managed to escape from the
" chamber, however, just as the roll
"was about to be called. The new
' Senators are quite indignant to think
that 'any of their party deserted them
but will probably forget all about it
very soon, as their disloyalty did not
. affect the result The first vote that
was taken after the new Senators
had been sworn in developed the
" fact that at least one of them is
rather Independent in his notions.
'''. This is Mr. Sanders, who, on the roll
' - was one of the three Republicans
voting with the Democrats on the
question of permitting the appoint
i ment of a lot of pension examiners
- without first being subjected to a
ivil service examination. In draw
V. Jng for position as regards the long
. and short ternis, it was .rather a pe
culiar fact that Mr. Sanders, the long
term Senator, drew the short term,
while Mr. Power, the short Senator,
- drew the long term.

greyhound, the Majestic, which pro-
' miles to break all records, has only
three blades, instead of four, the
standard number, and is said to have
tv abetter grip" on the water by rea-
son of the diminution in number.
This reminds an exchange that dur
ing the war a Federal gunboat, en
tering a Southern harbor, broke ofT
one blade of her propeller by run
ning on a shoal. This but the pro
: peeler out of ballance and it would
not work. Thereupon the comman
der ran his boat into shoal water,
- waited till the tide fell, and then had
.the opposite-blade knocked off. The
jreBult was that the boat was consid
erably faster with a two-bladed pro
v peller than with a four. This ought
to have established a valuable prin
: ciple, but it did not, and it remained
for the Majestic to find out by expe
, rlment what an accident had already
revealed.
