The Census Office has issuer a bulletin giving the population of ' cities in the country containing 8,()00 inhabitants or more. The total ur ban population in 1890 was 18H'),T(i. or 29.12 percent, of the total popula tion. In 1880 the urban population was 11,81817, or 22 57 percent, of the whole. The proportion of urban pop , elation has increased gradually dur- , ing the past century from .V up to 29.12 per cent., or from one-thirtieth up to nearly one-third of the total - population. The Increase has been .puite reiru larfrom the beginning up to 1880, ' While from 1880 to IWKJ it has made a leap from 22 67 up to 29.12 per cent., " thus illustrating in a forcible man ' ner the accelerating tendency of our , population toward urban life. The number of cities having a population of more than 8,000 increased fromfi in 1790 to 286 in 1880, whence it has ' leaped to 443 in 1890. I In 1880 there was but one city, New 'York, which had a population in ex , cess of a million. In IS!) there were three New York, Chicago and Phil itdelphia. ' , In 1870 there were but fourteen cities each containing more than 100,000 Inhabitants. In 1880 this num- .. bar had increased to twenty, and in 1890 to twenty-eight The North Altantic division con- , tains nearly one-half the urban pop ulation of the country, while the North Atlantic and North Central divisions together contain nearly five-sixths of it. In the North Atlantic division 5L68 per cent, or more than one-half ' the entire population, is contained In cities of 8,000 or more inhabitants. Paring the past ten years the urban element in this division has increas ed 4A53 per cent, while the total pop--' station has increased but 19.95 per ' conk In the North Central division 2T,9 ' per cent, or a trifle more than one- fourth of the inhabitants, are classed 'm urban. In tke past ten years the number of the urban element has nearly doubled, while the tota pop- 1 "elation has increased but 28.7H per ' cent , ' lathe South Atlantic and South - Central divisions the proportion of V Urban population is comparatively '' I email, being in the first named but 16,04 per cent of the entire popula- tlon, or less than one-sixth, and the second but 10.45 per cent, the pro ' portion of urban to the total popu- lation in all the Bovttheru Htates bod ing less Mian 18 per cent. The urban element In the Western division in IMtO constituted 274 per cent of the hde population, while in 18S0 it constituted H'i.i'T per cent. It has therefore, gained som w hat more rapidly P an the total popula tion.
