To the KtlitorofTHi Nitc. The Finance Committee of the Board of A Meriimn, met yesterday took account of stock and wreitled with the knotty problem of tiow )o make an one inch pin fit a two inch hole. Do what they will, they have only a certain amount of money to meet expenses and every department will have to be cut down. The seri ous question is how to munage it With such judgement in to do jtiHtice to alt. If the water and fire depart ments are curtailed our insurance rates will either be doubled or many oompanies will withdraw nltogoiher. If the police, then crime will nour ish, this department is alieady too small. If the starts, they will soon become impassable, some of them aro even now in that condition. If th graded schools, and our splendid corns of teachers becomo scattered and get employment elsewhere, it will take years to bring the schools back to their present condition and the man's child will be deprived of an education. We understand the finance committee will insist upon the ecIiooIs beinv closed on April 1st. They will likely have a conference with the school - mimi - sioners. The latter body have t iken suet) an interest iu the school and worked so hard to nut them on first class basis thattnare will like ly be lively times if such a confer ence Is held, it Is said ly persous competent to know that the cith-.ers of Charlotte pay about ?8( a year. The sale of w:ilaey is not stopper1 The fll.tiiKi m simply taken awav from the City, and given to Kev f Co., of Htatesvllle and our Graued Hchools must go. The present school tax lacks $4,o00a year of meeting the expenses of the schools and the Al derman have been making up the deficiency out of their general fund now there i no general fund to meet if The News in an article some weeks are predicted this state of af fairs. We would be pleased to hear from our able nuances how to meet and settle the present financial mud dle. Possibly the Couuty Commis sioners will loan us the money for a year or two, until we can weather the storm or they might rebate to us the Road tax. Prohibition is a good thing but it "comes high" at present and it don't seem to prohibit judging by the number of jugs arriving at the R. & D.. depot every day. i In; Ix-en iiiet and atemly through ! out. the grner.tl fading having been routined .iliii"t entirely to local op ' rrator.
