V CHARLOTTE NEWS, SEPTEMBER 1, 1902. M -- i . - ii, - i. . i A NEURALGIA We suggest curing a pain in the face by taking Scott's Emulsion into the stomach. Usual way of treating neural gia is to rub liniment on the outside. That's only a make shift. Scott's Emulsion is nerve food. Scott's Emulsion feeds n and strengthens nerves. For an obstinate neuralgia, for nervousness, for nerve weakness take Scott's Emul sion. It's nerve food and nerve strength. We'll send you a little to try, if you like. Tryon St. Dol- How the Boy With the Marked lar Caucec! Trouble. . Mr. Carl Hertz tells a good story against himsel.. Like all those who traffic in white magic, he occasionally has to enlist the services of a confed erate. In Nashville. Tenn hp pump the co-operation of a youth who was hanging around the stage door. "Want to see the show?" asked the conjurer. ies, sir. "Very well, I'll oass von in of you will do a little "thins to heln me. Take this marked dollar, put it in your lett trousers pocket, and, when I call for it from the stage, come up on the platform and hand it to rne." The delighted youth promised implicit obe dience, and was duly installed in a seat near the front. It was late in the evening that Hertz proceeded to the trick of which he had laid the foundation. He saw that the boy was in his place and proceeded to mystify the people with a marked sil ver dollar. He palmed it, swallowed it, passed it . through tables and bottles, fired it through a pistol into an orange and performed various other astonish ing feats in his own inimitable way. Finally he came to his climax. He threw the coin in the air. It vanished. "There!" cried Mr. Hertz, "a boy in the audience has it in his pocket! Come on the stage you!" He pointed to the boy, who slowly rose and scram bled awkwardly to the platform. "Now," said the tri-umphant conjuror, "give me that dollar piece out of your left trousers pocket!" The boy, dis tressed, fished out a handful of small coins and cried: "I've only got 80 cents left; I've been out and had some orange and ices." KIDNEYS MOST IMPORTANT OR GANS IN THE BODY. Refuses to Accept $40,000 for Her Property When Rich Men Want It. A washerwoman who werars wooden shoes when she wears any at all has refused to convert her modest belong ings into $40,000 cash. She wouldn't know what to do with a fortune if she had it, she says. The woman is Mrs. Margaret Sheeler, one of the pioneer settlers in the south ern part of Lake county, and one of the most picturesque characters in the community. In the summer she goes barefooted and in the winter her rough wooden shoes are sufficient. She works in the hayfield on her 21-acre farm two miles northeast of Lake Forest, milks a half dozen cows, keeps neat a plainly furnished cottage of six rooms, and "takes in" washing. Efforts of rich men to buy the prop erty and Mrs.' Sheeler's refusal to ac cept the liberal sums offered for it have brought the woman into a prom inence she resents. In the simplicity of her nature she cannot understand the desire of others to possess her land, and has chained a vicious dog at the entrance of her house to keep visitors away. The first attempt to, buy Mrs. Shee ler's place was made several months ago. Several men who wanted to build summer residences on it offered her $1,000 an acre for 10 acres. The farm is situated a mile north of the Onwentsia Club, on the Green Bay road, and on account of its desirable location it was the intention of the prospective pur chasers to lay. it out into a private park. Mrs. Sheeler refused the offer, giving as an excuse that she did not want to cut up her property. The same rate was then offered for the whole farm, and the widow was as indifferent to this proposition as she was to the others. , Last week a man went to her with an offer of $40,000 for the place. Lie tound her swinging a scythe in a hayfield, and stopped work reluctantly to allow him to talk with her. "I do not want to sell my place," she said when the visitor introduced him self. "But I am offering you $40,000 for it That is much more than it is worth.' "It is worth so much' to me that J shall keep it," Mrs. Sheeler replied. "You might as well move along." Chicago Tribune. OLD SOLDIER'S EXPERIENCE. M. M. Austin, a civil war veteran, of Winchester, Ind., writes: "My wife was sick a long time in spite of good doctor's treatment, but was wholly cured by Dr. King's New "Life Pills, which . . worked wonders for her health.'
