Southern railway trains were right ton the scratch today. Mr. J. Elam Caldwell is ill at his home near Harrisburg. Little Clara Wishart is ill with ty phoid fever at her mother's home on West Ninth street. The little son of Mr and Mrs. Frank Burgin is ill at their home on West Ninth street. Mrs. B. D. Chadwick's many friends will regret t olearn of her illness. A. Dellinger, who was shot by William Harper, Saturday, is still Jiv ing. There is little hope for his re covery. The gentlemen who favor a cotton mill merger are expected in Charlotte tomorrow. What success they will meet wan. seems to be decidedly in doubt. Dr. J. P. Munroe was down from Davidson this morning. His mission here today was to contract with Mc Causland & Co. for a lot of tiling for the Presbyterian Hospital. Mr. Guy Withers, who is now lo cated in St. Louis, writes to a friend in Charlotte that the waters are about to take that western city. As soon as Mr. John W. Todd feels physically able to take the trip, he will go to Wrightsville Beach to spend several weeks. He is improving daily. Mr. Alonzo Brooks, of New York, assistant secretary of the Metropolitan Plate Glass Co., No. 47 Cedar street, is in the city for the purpose of ap pointing an agent. The court house is almost de serted today. The High Sheriff is gone, also Register of Deeds' McDonald and Tax Collector T. P. Ross. All took a notion that a sea bath would prove beneficial. Mr. C. W. Johnston of the High land Park Co. informs a News man this morning that the foundation for the weave shed of the new mill has been laid. Work on the new plant, Mr. Johnston states, is progressing rapidly. Mr. Gilmer Irwin, son of Chief of Police H. C. Irwin, has returneQ from a pleasant trip abroad. He is again hard at work in Baltimore. He writes that his trip was a most enjoyable one. The funeral of Mr. W. N. Aber nethy was conducted from Independ ence Hill Baptist church this morning at 11 o'clock. A large number from Charlotte attended the funeral. The in terment was in the churchyard. Miss Julia C. Emery, general sec retary of the Woman's Auxiliary of the oBard of Missions of the Eipiscopal church, will spend some days in the city this week as the guest of Capt. and Mrs. Wilkes. Dutcher, Taken to N. J. Mr. S. A. Dutcher, Jr., assistant cashier of the Mutual Life Insurance Company, returned this morning from Bound Brook, N. J., where he went to car rythe body of his little daughter Gladys, who died last Wednesday night after a severe illness of some ten days. The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at Bound Brook, and the little body now rests in the family lot in the cemetery at that place. Mr. and Mrs. Dutcher since com ing to our city have made a number or friends, who deeply sympathize with them in their affliction. A Poor Exchange. Mr. W. M. Farrow, of the Little Long Company, is out $30 just on ac count of his accomodating spirit. Last night a negro boy approached him at the minstrel show and asked him to change a dollar. Mr. Farrow reached for his purse and handed the negro a $20 gold piece, a $10 geld piece and two 25 cent pieces, all for a silver dol lar. He did not learn of his mistake (until this afternoon. Mr. M. H. Caldwell has returned to Concord.
