Reese, is recover ing from a severe attack of diphteria. She has been ill for nearly a week. Strange and Shuman are repairing the damage done the Second Presby terian church steeple by the lightning of last Saturday evening. Mrs. A. J. Hagood, who has been quite sick, is much improved. As soon as she feels able to undertake the trip she will go to Wrightsville Beach to spend some time. Bishop A. Coke Smith dedicated the new 514,000 Methodist church in Rock ingham last Thursday. There was a lnrge crowd present and Bishop Smith's sermons were greatly enjoyed. Mr. Charles Sledge and Mr. Solo mon, both employes of the Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company, wore right painfully burned while at their work yesterday. Mr. L. W. Cooper, the contractor, left this morning for Lincolnton, where he is building the new mill lor Mr. J. A. Abernethy. Mr.' Cooper ex pects to have this mill ready for the machinery by Sept. 15th. Miss Mary Pescud, a returned mis sionary from Brazil and formerly of Raleigh, N. C. will address the Young People's Missionary Union of Tryon Street Methodist church tonight at 8:15. All' are invited to attend." Mr. W. O. Cochrane returned last night from Goldsboro, where he went to take Lula Jackson, a demented col ored woman. She was placed in the care of the Eastern Insane Asylum in that city. Assistant Register of Deeds J. B. Powell is off on his vacation. During his absence Mr. John McDonald, a brother of Mr. A. M. McDonald, is suo bing for him. Mr. Powell will visit his brother at Henrietta. Rev. Dr. J. T. Plunkett, of the TTii-at Preshvterian church. Augusta, Ga., will preach for the congregation , of the Second Presbyterian cnurcn next Sunday morning and night. He will be the guest of Miss Sallie David son. The St. Elizabeth Guild will serve ice cream this afternoon at the resi dence of Mrs. Horace Baker, in Dil worth, from 6 till 10 o'clock. Overman and Miss Reid Overman, who have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. Tate, left this morning for Salisbury, where they will be the guests of Senator and Mrs. Lee S. Overman. Mr. W. C. Wood and wife, of Rock Hill, were here today. Mr. and Mrs. Gill S. Peyton, of Wax haw, were Charlotte visitors today. Messrs. M. B. and te. P. Hartsell, of Concord, spent last night at the Buford. Mrs. W. H. Redfern is spending some time at Cleveland Springs. Mr. Harry W. Dixon went to Gas tonia this morning on business. Mrs. D. D. Traywick, nee Miss Cora Wallis, left this morning for Winns boro, S. C, where she goes to attend the marriage of Miss Ada Cureton and Mr.- Julius Mayo, which will take place next xuesaay. Miss Julia Wallis left this morning for Pineville. Mr. James T. Penny and wife leave tomorrow for a ten days' stay in Wash ii'gton and Philadelphia. Mrs. James H. Taylor, Jr., of Wil mington, arrived here this morning to visit her mother, Mrs. Margaret A. McLean. Mr. H. B. Dillon is in Spartanburg. Rev. A. C. Barron returned from Wilmington last night. Dr. A. J. McKelway, has returned from Wrightsville. Miss Alice Holland is visiting hr cousin, Mrs. Thompson, in Columbia, S. C. She will return tomorrow night. Kiss Addie Belle Barron will return from Wrightsville tonight. Miss Madeline Miller, of Shelby, is the guest cf Mrs. Luke Seawell. Mrs. Eldred Griffith and her father, Mr. Rawliinson. left this morning for Cleveland Springs,, where they will spend two weeks. Misses Louise Erwm and baaie Grier went to Lincolnton this morn insr. The tablet bears this inscription: "Erected by the Saturday Morning-Bessie Dewey Club, in loving memory of Bessie Lacy D?w ey, who inspired and kept alivethe First Public Library in Charlotte." M-s Dewey was for many years the president of the Saturday Morning Bcok Club. She directed the reading of the club and was the inspiration of its members. At her death, to show in some faint way the love they bore her, tne mem bers changed the name to the Bessie Dewey Book Club. It is most fitting that the tablet should be in the new library, for by her devoted service Mrs. Dewey kepL alive the first public library in this city, and made possible the possession of this new free library. 11 7 Mr. C. H. Duls left this morning for Wrightsville Beach. Mr. A. L. Evans, of Cheraw, was a Charlotte visitor today. Jail Repairs. County Commissioners H. J. Brown and Samuel Kell were here today looking after some improvements to the county jail. It is understood that Messrs. Kell and BrOwn will suggest that a new fence be built around the jail property and that Sheriff Wallace's apartments be repapered and other interior improvements will be made. At the last meeting of the board of commissioners Messrs. Brown and Kell were appointed a committee to look after this work. They are to report oack at the next meeting of the board of county commissioners. Selecting School Site. County Superintendent of Education. R. J. Cochran, was out in Berryhill township this morning selecting the site for the new school building tnat will be erected in Berryhill District No. 2.
