CHARLOTTE NEWS. JULY 2. 1903. Market -Reports (Report j Received by Private Wire by Howell & Dodsworth.) NEW YORK COTTON. New York. July 2. C. W. Lee & Co. spy: The advance in December and January today was due entirely to short covering before the bureau to morrow. There is a general indisposi tion on the part of the market to take any risk at this season of the year and under the manipulative character of dealings in the other crop months. At ten cents a pound for the fall positions short selling probably has been a fu ture and as the crop has not advanced as rapidly for the entire month . as many had hoped and for this reason the government may not advance the figures above 77 or 78, shorts were in clined to get under cover and wait de velopments. This bying came from all directions and brought about an ad vance of ten points. It was not expected owing to the break in Liverpool. August broke sharply about 20 points and this was not an encouraging fac tor. Later in the day, however, uncer tainty over the report became such that the few buying orders soon start ed a more active demand from commis sion houses and prices advanced rather sharply. However, disappointing the report tomorrow may be and how ever, unfavorably in actual figures it may compare with last year's showing, it must be conceded that the crop is now making rapid strides. In every re spect the situation is the opposite of that existing six weeks ago. Then nothing could have been worse than were the conditions. Now weather is such as to suit the most exacting. The plant, is strong and sturdy awing to the abundant rainfall and differs decidedly from the condition last year. We can not advise purchase of December and January at moment. New York, July 1. A natural re-action occurred in the stock market to day under the influence of attack upon specialties. We believe good stocks should be bought now when they are weak as the outlook favors a further advance in the market following a moderate recession. The developments today in the foreign exchange market were not favorable but we do not be lieve that rates will go to a point where any more than a moderate amount of gold will be exported. The close was firm and not far from best of today. Trading was profession al but seemed to indicate early at tempt to hammer prices had not been a success. Sales of stocks today, 365,700 shares. New York, July 2. Fleet & Co. say: S London easier. News moderately bull ish. Our market easier on selling by ! traders who prefer evening up over the holidays. Statement that President Roosevelt would forward to Russian government the Hebrew petition had i unfavorable effect on market. Very little commission house business. The public don't appear in a mood to buy to any' extent. Atchison, St. Paul and Mo. Pacific and U. S. weak features on fear of poor report from corn crop. Don't look for much changes either way in market; prices may ease off little more. Sell on firm and buy on weak spots for turn. Pennsylvania statement rater poorer than expected, but the stock holds well. A rather poor bank statement is expected to morrow. Money about 4 per cent, and will probably work little easier. For eign exchange market very steady. B. R. T. firm on prospects of enormous business over the holidays.
