Lee & Co. says: The market today was de cidedly firmer. That is to say, yester day's reaction continued but with a steadier undertone and less irregu larity in the course of prices. As was natural pn the first day of recovery prices moved around rather uncer tainly and sentiment lacked confi dence during the greater part of yes 'terday'f session. Today, however, there were more buyers in the market i nil options and the outlook seemed plearer. 'After a slight setback follow ing; the opening commission houses i ior tiie purchase of December and January began to come in and the market improved. Reports from Liver pool showed better spinning demand over there and there was a noticeable increase in the investment buying in such options as October, December and January here. It is now known that the supply of cotton at the close of the year will be at about record figures as regards smallness and this will result in an exceedingly active demand for the first of the new crop. This would be natural under any con ditions and now that the new Orleans pool seems bent on closing as many mills as possible by charging an exor bitant price for the cotton owned by it there will be a very liberal demand for cotton during the early fall months. We have received trust worthy advices that fully 75 percent of New England mills will shut down for three or four weeks during Au gust. Weather conditions were again satisfactory today although x reports of insect damage continue to be re ceived from Texas. We, cannot but feel that the purchase of December ;tnd January around 9 1-2 to be ad ' vised and the very first unfavorable weather developments will result in a .harp advance in those positions. It will be remembered that cotton sold in the fields of Texas at ten cents a pound, all through : Augustl September and October in 1900 and the situation this year favors even higher prices than prevailed at that time. New Orleans, July 9. New York wires: "Learn on best authority that at least three-fourths of New England mill will shut down two to four weeks in August. They are taking this meas ure fearing high prices for September shipments. This shut-down will carry them far enough along so that the first half cotton shipments will be easily as much as majority will need to buy. New York, July -9 Town Topics says: The outlook favors improvement of a moderate character with the ac companiment of dullness.; The , market seems to us to have reacnea a point where the smallest genuine buying carries nrices up without . much ma nipulation as the floating supply of stocks has been reduced to a minimum Stocks which most attract us as specu lations on the long side are B. and O.
