CHARLOTTE NEWS. JULY J 3, 1903 Peripatetic Aito:- all, society has its means cf ,;. it in o against the chronic distur l, i s ul' the social peace. And this ,..mnumity knows how to .rcnj r. body hita Coventry weHenough." The chilli ji, of studied silence will after a u!;ik ireeze tne very fire of the The report is hereby denied that a pr.riy of Charlotte citizens, who went lining together off the Wrightsville (iast the other day had : any con versation at all about the next Mavor (,i (.nuijuiif. me iacis are that the raii.inios at nrst precluded the form ing of any effective' conspiracy and tiu- topic oi sea-sickness was upper must in me minds of the party, once the breeze freshened and they' were a"ie ro get ouisiae." Une of the lights ur int Limriotce Dar began simul i.im-.ui.v iu wissn mat ne nad not snioueu two cigars and that he had .aten just a little! breakfast. Then one . i t ne leading manufacturers and ex pel -uts ci trie city of Charlotte lost ai mie.rbi in tne nsn and stretched supine upon a bench. He was followed liy one of the best known merchants of the Queen City who left his line uuuemy wun a nsh on the Pnrt -.-.p it having had his sympathy excited for Miiiering creatures of the sea, and the subsequent proceedings interested him no more. The Peripatetic who !.;ul gene out with fear and trembling .:.:.! u;ia iijienea wun a feeling of ;--w- and admiration to the lawyer's letounting of his tried superiority to M?n-MnMiess, was tne only one who Kept arter the hsh. The party caught over seventy-five fish, how much aver it is not Known at this writing, and it has been forgotten just how large the largest one was. The Peripatetic i ; not going back on his friends who may have by this time returned to Charlotte and forgotten such little matters as the details of a fishing L11JJ. ) o . . uuvernor Aycock might- give Dr Chrietzburg the retort that Governor Bob Taylor did to Sam Jones, that if n were not for the exercise of the par uoning power the Governor's critic would have been in hell long ago. rooaoly, however, the Gastonia preacher would not be so dangerous an antagonist as is the Reverend Sam uovernor Taylor nad threatened to run Sam Jones out of Nasheville. Sam was about to go anyhow. But he fired this parting shot. He told of a little dog that ran after a train as it was moving out of town. The little dog naricea ana barked and it did look as if it were driving the train off. But unfortunately it managed to get in fiont or the eiTgme7"anrTt returned to town "a sadder, a wiser and a bobtail er dog." We doubt if the congregation were in any humor for hearing the gospel after that sally. Speaking of preachers, the last time the Peripatetic was in Asheville he heard a story on a once prominent di vine of that city. In fact, parts of his anatomy were very prominent. He soon established a reputation for his opposition to the deadly cigarette. There was nothing to be said too bad about the cigarette fiend and the devil who sold the fiend the cigarettes. It came to pass that Cato's "Carthage Delenda Eat" was a tame repetition as compared with the endless iteration as to the curse of the cigarette. But it happened that the preacher's church court met in Asheville and a mis guided young zealot proposed a reso lution condemning the manufacture and sale of cigarettes, whereupon the boss of the religious convention pulled a string and the prominent preacher was the puppet at the other end of it. He arose and moved he of all others that the resolution be laid upon the table. And all Asheville wondered. From which it appears that a man's principle is sometimes in proportion to his interest. And that reminds the Peripatetic of another preacher whose degeneracy from independence , to .toadyism has been a sad spectacle for the observant. When we first met him he was rather noted for his manliness and the strength with which he would express his sentiments. But the trial of pov erty and the temptation of making a living through expedients overcame him. He has become the apologist, oven for the saloon, and the defender of abuses he once would have con demned. Such a degeneracy from man hood is pitiable. The people who un derstand his case pity him too much to give him the scourging he deserves. It is bad enough to be of the earth, earthy. It is worse to be o the toad, toady. , . Captain Bason, of Charlotte has long been famed among his friends for, his sturdy denial of the fact that a base ball could be made to curve. He has taken a seat directly behind the home base and derided the "spectators who talked about in-curves and out-curves and down-curves. He always saw straight when the ball was sent from the pitcher's hand and all balls looked alike tp him. But the Captain has been tonverted, and Capt Jesse Oldhanvwas the man who persuade'd him. The captain told the story this way: "T told him that if he would set three stakes in a straight line, and maki the hall go to the right of the first stake, to the left of the second and to the right of the third, that would be an ocular demonstration. And you know, he did it. At first I accused him of fudging and I made him stand where his arm couldn't reach around the first post. And he did It then. I '.wouldn't M on about it and I keep on guying them, but he did curve that ball." Captain Bason is a last ditch-fighter and hetill'has the alternative of de nying this interview,, following, some august examples.- "- Stan;7hTlidnySCShL?,r Md Acids ,frora the system, cys into healthy action, cures constipation and indigestion. nio uwhe, AND ANY ni-UE-B n , . W. lA & Co. says: There is really very little to ana to what was -said on the cotton market last week. As the season wears on evidences of the success of buying December and January on a 9 1-2 basis and taking profits on any advance ac cumulate. This morning .Tannarv snld at about 9.50 on favorable weather and a oreak on Liverpool. No one seems to know what the New Orleans pool intends to do with "all its cotton a mills are closing dovn every day. It is now reported thai 275.000 additional spindles go out in Fall River this week. Reports from the cotton belt are such as to indicate generally satis- ractory progress in the condition of the crop, sufficiently satisfactory to prevent any thing like an advance in the fall positions and yet the situation is not such as to bring about much of a break. Under these cirenmstanrps there is every inducement to buy fall positions on substantial reactions as any downward movement will be ne cessarily slow and tedious for some weeks to come. In the event of disas ter to the pool prices of all options would move downward in sympathy but January cotton at 91-4 or 9 1-2 is not likely to prove high unless the out turn of this years cotton crop is ex ceptionally large. So much cotton will be needed that prices during early part of the season should be high whatever may result later on in the year. There is no trade in the manipulated posi tions but considerable interest in the course of prices in October, December I suidJaniiary Ajii another .breakbe- J low 9 1-2 would pick up cotton again.
