CHARLOTTE NEWS, JULY 23. 1 90S Reports New York, July 23 C. W. Lee & Co. (ys: December cotton today sold at ;.:ST while October ran well above. 10 rents. The more one sees of this cot ton market the more one realizes the wonderful possibilities in the' way "of profits to be obtained from purchase cf the new crop at such figures as have i cvently obtained. That is while the , utlcok is all that could be expected fallowing the poor start and the crop n ay well be considered in better shape than a year ago at this time. None the -.iss the needs of world are such that !'4 is too low a price for this season L i the year. We do not attemut to say v hat the price of cotton may he in the j ring of next year for. this will de i , nd entirely on the actual size of the v eld. But until it is known the crop is n t only to be as large as any ever w.ised iu this country but considerably larger, there will be -so active a de mand for the early -markets as will usult in just such advances as we have had since Tuesday. As we said esterday, the question naturally pre sents itself, if the , market goes up thirty or" forty points in the face of good weather what will it do in the event of untoward developments. Un less this crop is a bumper crop cotton next year will sell at 12 cents a pound. And should the yield turn out ..under eleven and a quarter million the price is likely to be very much higher than this. Going on this certainty, therefore, there is every reason to buy cotton on slight recessions as one is almost cer tain to make a profit on such an in vestment. The corner, appears to be as firmly fixed as ever and this may bring an added sctimulus to the new crop. October is almost certain to sell over lvhii cents next fall. We advise pur chases on every break. Futures closed barely steady High Low Close 9 5 66 9 63 65 9 63-65 13 3J-40 12 40-41 10 87 9 87 9 71-73 9 69-70 'an Feb ; Mch Jul Aug Sept Oct ... ... New York, July 23 Town Topics says: Stock market promises to be irregular today. Better idea of Boston failure seems to indicate that it is not so serious a 5 first supposed. We think it will be wise to buy Baltimore and Ohio Central and ' Pennsylvania in the event of weakness. We are not favorably inclined -toward the indus trials or non-dividend payers as "yet. They are vulnerable to bear attack. The, action of the market yesterday shows how advisable is the taking, of moderate profits. Chicago, July 23 Wheat There was good buying early, although cables were lower and . foreign news bearish bu the stiff upturn in corn and num erous reports of poor threshing returns brought in good buying orders from St. Louis and southwest and there was thong in the situation to frighten shorts who covered freely. News from the spring wheat region was of a bear ish character and there was selling from that, -quarter but offerings were well taken by a crowd of wealthy local operators who we think nave started in to accumulate long wheat. , There was more or less realizing as well as shorts selling with, corn working off, but at the report of good export busi ness there was a rush to buy, with values working higher. ($200, 000) dollars, bearing interest at a rate not to exceed 5 per cent., for the pur pose - of. .macadamizing and otherwise m proving the .public roads of said county and paying . its - floating in debtedness. - t Published by order of the board, this the 11th day of June, 1903. . J. H. WEDDINGTON, Chairman. M. McDONALD, Register of Deeds and ex-officio Clerk of Board. THE BOND ISSUE Board of Commissioners Is sue Statement to the Public To ' the Citizens of Mecklenburg County. Having many questions asked as to the disposition of the $200,000 to be raised by the proposed bond issue to be voted on at the election on Au gust 11th, 1903, we desire to say in answer to all these questions that the money derived from the sale of these bonds will be used in the exten sion to . the county line of the roads that have heretofore been worked. These will take all the leading roads in the county. None of this fund will be used in belt lines. There is about 100 mile3 of roads 5'et to build to complete the road sys tem to the county lines. . .. In answer to those who think this issue of bonds will increase the tax rate we say the tax rate will , not be increased. The present levy of 25 cents on the $100 will pay the interest on the bonds and leave a surplus of $25,000 or $30,000 with which to keep the roads in repair. Some of the roads now need re pairing and it is of vital importance that the extension of roads be com pleted as early as possible so more attention may be given to the repair work. The county now has all ma chinery to do this work, hence no ex penditure for. new machinery will be necessary. With this bond is3ue the roads can in our opinion be finished in four or not more than five years. Yery respectfully, J. H. WEDDINGTON, w. g. Mclaughlin, II. J. BROWN, B. T. PRICE, S. H. KELL.
