Contrary to all expectations ,,. i department issued figures that V.;V '.richer than the ones of previous ri. ,,:;!. :ind the showing came as a t ; re from the trade. Not that the !,'u linen of the growing crop was be- , v 1 ,e be lower than the figures but , ;:;im' the conservative tendency of i; ,v r.nient estimates led the majority - ; i.;Iief that an advance would he given. The effect upon the v- 1 1 was decisive, and practically reeent advance has been lost. ; -: :.;.-!t of the week was not unex . . . The inflation and artificial of prices resulting from over ... . nation, and cotton corner would .'.i-. : t-o:i revealed in course of a few , . us even without the assistance of - uevernnient estimate. The Times-Di-mocrat this morning says: The r.-ernmtnt's report, though quite in-oa'-lusive as to the final result, for the moment at least shifts the burden p"oof to the shoulders of the bulls. In ot'n(?r words, the comparatively high condition fixes the trades benefit in a bis r-rcp and nothing short of positive lycof will suffice to shake this convic tion. On one point alone is sentiment s i'd in the fluid form; everybody ac (fpts the patent physical fact that an early frost would work an instant revolution in the outlook. fcut this item cannot in the very na-;-:ir" r'i things be forthcoming for some 'feks. in the meanwhile, spinners v-i!l be encouraged to potter along un til the movement shall have risen to its normal volume, and speculative i'f-ars will be invited to fish for whale e.nrr. mote. IJei- contra, the speculative bulls will "at- very small horns, and the farmer yid thus be left to fight the first bat--' almost unaided. In such circum-staii'-e-s the sellers- ot discounts may be-'-ome too numerous for comfort, so t,1;n a sudden fall of the mercury Wf:"H precipitate an old fashioned stampede. 't is therefore certain e.noueh that fiynamite factory will employ 'I'li! ,! shifts of help and that the will be high. Many tears may ' !' 1 in the sequel but they will not :tir"l by the brokers. New York, Sept. 4 Town Topics says: The market promises to be dull ud uninteresting today, and the prin cipal business will be the evening up of contracts on account of the extend ed holidays until Tuesday morning. There is some talk of a drive at the short interests, but this is not regarded seriously even by the traders. We ex pect a little selling pressure on Read ing today, and an attempt to move Atchison up is likely to be made. There is a bearish feeling on Metropo litan, and bull tips are out on Pennsyl vania. The corn crop is absolutely be yond danger from frosts, there is lit tle probability that any attempt to bull the market will " be made. The London market is quiet, but firm. A. tent son . .
