CHARLOTTE NEWS, JULY 15, 1 904. THE RISE AND FILL III PRICES TODAY WHAT THE BULLS AND BEARS DID IN NEW YORK, LIVERPOOL, CHI- l CAGO AND OTHER TRADING CENTERS THE QUOTATIONS. (Private wire to Howell & Dodsworth, Brokers.) New York, July 15. C. W. Lee & Co. say: The weeks cotton market has proved a surprise to a great many professionals. There has been settled conviction on the part of a majority of those operating in the market-, that as long as crop news continued good nothing but sagging prices was in sight but for four days this week the market has gradually hardened, gain ing a few points, each day. This ad vance has taken place in the fact of strenuous opposition, on the part bear element, and with very little assistance on the part general public. There has been change for the worse in the na ture of advices from the cotton belt, and the rise is generally attributed to the technical rr :on of the cotton situation lather ilizw to any change in crop news. The simple fact is that there has been too much company on the bear side. Everyone has been short of cotton ,and no one dares to buy, and as a result there has been o speculative long interests and one of the most ex tensive short intents that market has seen in some years. Now when a few shorts attempted to convert paper into real profits the process proved disturb ing. Sell as they would bears could not supply cotton enough to prevent a re action. Day after day the traders would ask whatsit all meant. A careful review cf all the factors failed to furnish the real excuse for the rise, and the more cppostition there appeared to be the stronger the undertone of the market, became. As far as the week is con cerned, these who played the long side obtained the money. There is still an extensive short interest that may or may not be induced or frightened to cover. This depends much on nature of weather next week. Should anything unfavorable turn up it will be quite impossible to prevent n further rise. AW this is entirely independent of the size of the crop and the course of the market later on. Looking at market at moment, there are evidences of so ex tensive a short interest and resulting nervousness on every little advance that it would seem to be best policy to keep off the short side at present. If we have a sharp advance things would be different. It will be some weeks be fore new cotton is available and until this time arrives it looks as though buyers on any decline, would be able to find a market to sell on at a profit.
