PERHAPS FATALLY CUT.
Serious Altercation Between Negroes
at Meat Market.
A serious and perhaps fatal cutting
took place at Powell's market yester
day afternoon about 5 o'clock when
Single Caldwell, a negro boy about 15
years old, was terribly cut on the right
side, in the region of the liver, by
Allen Beattie, who is being held with
out bail to await developments.
The physicians in attendance state
that the wounded negro has about even
chances for life. The weapon used
was a butcher knife with a blade six
or seven inches long, and this was
thrust into the body of Caldwell by
Beattie several inches making a very
bad cut, and exposing a large part of
the internal organs.
Caldwell is at the Good Samaritan
Hospital where he is lingering in a
serious condition, and with chances
about equal of getting over the wound.
There were no direct witness to the
cutting but the wounded negro said
that Beattie came up to him and said,
"I am going to throw this water on
you." Caldwell answered him, "You
had better not," and then according
to the statement of the wounded boy
Beattie ran behind him and thrust the
knife deep into his side.
THE DELEGATES DINED.
CAPTURED A WHALE.
State Senator Duls Entertains Ju
dicial Convention at Dinner.
The members and delegates of the
Twelfth judicial district convention
were handsomely remembered today
by State Senator Charles H. Duls, who
gave a dining at the Denny Cafe in
honor of the delegates and a number
of friends in the city.
Thfi invitation was extended by Mr
Duls to about 30 delegates to attend
the dining in addition to several mem
bers of the Charlotte bar, and a tew
friends, and immediately upon the ad
journment of the convention nie guests
repaired to the Denny where they were
served in fine style with a tempting
menu in one of the large rooms of
the cafe upstairs.
There was plenty of wit and humor
on every side and great satisfaction
expressed over the nominations today,
and a very pleasant hour was spent.
Mr. Heriot Clarkson was the recip
ient cf many congratulations at the
dining and the only regret was that
Judge Webb could not be present at
the gathering.
The party lingered long at the ta
bles discussing political (joestions and
topics of interest, and did not break up
until about 2:30 this afternoon.
Was Found In Beaufort Harbor En
joyable Anniversary.
Special The-News.
New Bern.. June 14. A very enjoy
able anniversary was held at the First
Baptist Church Sunday morning. The
occasion was the celebration of the
church's growth, financially, numeri
cally, etc., during the past year. Re
marks were made, by Messrs. S. M.
Brunson, J. C. Whitty, J. B. Holland,
D. H. Green, A. D. Ward and Rev. W.
A. Ayers, the pastor of the church.
Rev. John J. Douglas, pastor of the
Tabernacle. Baptist Church, was pres
ent and spoke on the "Baptist Out
look in North Carolina." The First
Baptist Church, has according to the
reports, enjoyed the greatest year of
prosperity in its -entire history.
A small sperm whale was caught in
Beaufort harbor a few days ago. It
had probably lost its course and wan
dered into the harbor as whales are
seldom captured there. The blubber
yielded only one barrel of oil, which
was purchased by Mr. B. B. Daven
port, of this city, and afterwards
shipped by him to the North, as there
is no local demand for whale oil.

MISS BELL SEYMOUR DEAD.
Was Teacher at Elizabeth College
Left for Home Three Mteks Ago.
Dr. Chas. B. King, president of Eliza
beth College, received today a letter
from Rochester, N. Y., announcing the
death of Miss Bel Seymour, for three
years a teacher of voice in the school
of music at Elizabeth College.
Miss Seymour left college this year
shortly before commencement, about
a month ago, and was not feeling well
at that time, although she was no more
ill than usual, having been in rather
poor health for. two years.
Miss Seymour, on account of her
health, had decided to rest a year, and
had so notified Dr". King, resigning her
position for one year at least, in order
to recuperate her strength.
The news of her death will come as
a great shock to the many friends
whom she had made during her resi
dence here. She was a popular young
woman, and beloved by all who knew
her. Her death occurred last Monday
at the home of her parents in Rochest
er, N. Y.

Curious Bet That Shows an Impossible
i Way of Smoking.
"I have a customer who thinks he
smokes twenty Wadsworth Bros.' Chi
cos a day," said Mr. Sheppard. "As a
! matter of fact, he gives away a good
many, but it is his firm belief that
he smokes more cigars than any other
man in Charlotte. He says he is wil
ling to bet that no man can even
smoke one cigar continuously until it
is consumed without taking it from his
lips, and he has won a good many
boxes of Chicos on this simple bet.
"Of course, this man's trade keeps
us buying Chicos right along, but aside
from what we sell him ,Chicos have
the largest sale of any cigar in our
case.
"We warrant it clear Havana filler,
and although it sells for five cents
it is equal to any ten cent goods. We
cannot recommend it too highly."

Altercation on East Trade.
There was consideraole excitement
down on East Trade street early this
afternoon, near the corner of College,
occasioned by an altercation between
Mr. W. H. Hartis and Mr. C. R. Mc
Ginn, about some trivial matter which
the two were discusing. The two men
grew quite warm over the matter and
a turbulent scene was threatened for
a short while. Finally Officer Irvine
came up and the two were summoned
to court. Preferring to have the case
go before a magistrate, they asked that
'Squire S. H. Hilton try the case. It
was accordingly referred to him, and
the hearing set for this afternoon.
