THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, JUNE 18, 1900. 10 ; i ''J ; : s ' f : 1 .... - r ; ' I ; ' i I I .' -. : r i ALLEGED GAME OF CHANCE UNDER FIRE r..,;v . . The City Recorder Examining into the Workings of a Board that is Now in a Number of Stores in Charlotte. Other Cases Heard by the Recorder. There were a number of important cases before the Recorder this morn ing, including a shooting scrape, blind tiger, several rows, and the investiga tion of the charge of keeping a gam bling device or game of chance against several well known merchants of the city. The first case called was that of the negro Sam Perry charged with trying j to put a bullet through his friend's i hide yesterday morning. Sam Perry was the man at whom Decatur fired his pistol. The two men had been friends all their lives and were raised together, they said, and declared in court this mornins that there was no bad blood between them. The trouble started over a woman, and even that seemed in a fair way of being settled when Decatur started out Sunday morning, perhaps with a couple of drinks in his antomony, and according to Perry, he came shouting up the street. Decatur raised his weapon and tried as best he could to train its deadly aim at Perry, while Decatur's father took a hand and tried to hold his warlike son, so that he couldn't fire his gun. The pistol went off. , That was the end of the affair un til the officers found Decatur Sunday evening full of liquor, calmly sleeping after the battle. He was found to have borne an ex cellent reputation previous to this af fair. His bond was placed at $100 which was quickly put up by those for whom he had been working. The court next called the case of an old negro, Henry Johnson, who was charged with selling a pint of liquor to J. F. McLeod. The negro was not ar rested until this morning, and at that time was carrying a couple of bundles in which he concealed about a quart of liquor. The negro makes a living by trading in empty bottles between here and Salisbury. He was placed under a bond of $200 for his appearance at the August term of court. A neighborhood difficulty that took place last night in which Mamie Suggs, living near the coal chute, was charged with disorderly conduct, the complain ant being Fannie Dellinger. There was a good deal of evidence brought" out of a rather brisk sort about the inter change of epithets between the two women, both of whom were found guilty, but judgment was suspended. The court stated that the complainant In the ease had started to lead a bet ter life and was no doubt affronted by the attack upon her which brought out all her indignation and a number of strong epithets too. The most important case was that against E. S. Howie McManus and Hunneycut, and W. G. Shumaker, all keepers of stores, who were charged with keeping gambling devices in their places of business. The alleged device is a board and on the front side are numerous stars covering variously colored pegs which the user punches out with a small stick. Different pegs call for different small articles of 5 cents value, and there are no blanks. There is also a chance, in every 200, at a prize of some value and punches are five cents each. Mr. Plummer Stewart appeared for the defendants. Mr. Howie was placed on the stand and called on to explain the manner in which the device work ed The nature of the prize board and the fact that every one who paid 5 cents got some article equal in value to the money expended, made the case a rather difficult one to decide, and it was continued over until tomorrow.
