THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, JUNE 30, 1906. 9 0 It it TODAY'S ..MARKETS COTTON Times Democrat Summary Cotton (Furnished by Gibert & Clay of New Orleans, La.) . . New Orleans, June 30. The forma t in of a pool on Thursday with enough ions interest in July held in strong hands some thirty or forty thousand bales to squeeze New Orleans shorts out. of a penny in the event the deal lans out as expected has complicated iko mid summer position considerably, vwd yesterday the local ring scared up suiflicient covering in that option to l oosi it $1 a bale. Meanwhile the new nop through subtile influence of sen timent gained price ground in the face oi a bearish crop outlook. The spot market evidenced improvement most e; which was traceable to the strength of July contracts, and the promise of a squeeze. At the moment the situa tion appears to involve some relatively ronsequential possibility s though noth ing really important is likely to occur because of the pigmy proportion of the speculative interest in all positions, and a bureau condition showing any thing less than radical in the general professional view will hardly stir up a whirlwind because the public per sistently refused to take a hand. The week end figures were about a stand off though bullish to the extent of showing a greater decrease in visible supply than for the same week in jiny previous year. New York Sun Summary Cotton. (Furnished by Gibert & Clay of New Orleans, La.) New York, June SO. The July notices, amounting to 60,000 bales, had less effect than was expected. It is not the first time that the bears have mapped out a certain programme for a day, only to find that they had jrot the cart before the horse. At any rate, although prices declined mod tnuely, early in the day, they soon turned the other way, and advanced sharply under the influence of buying by the large spot houses, and others. A good many thought this indicated ; firm under-tone. At least, it indicated that cotton is no such drug in the mar ket as the pessimists had supposed. The weather was favorable, the Liver pool abvices were not by any means inspiring and the speculations was small. But in spite of it all there was buying of a good character, and now that the July notices are out of the TV ay it would not be at all surprising to see a healthier market, at least for a time. The chort interest is still very large in the next crop, and some pri vate Liverpool advices state that the under-tone there is firm. Some have ' evened up" pending the Government report which is to appear on July 3rd. New York Cotton. Prices of stocks at the opening were generally quite a little lower than they closed Thursday, reflecting perhaps, the influense of the lower range of quotations sent over from London. After a little while prices rallied and fluctuated without any great change until the early part of the afternoon. In the last two hours of the afternoon stocks again developed pro nounced weakness, and fell rapidly, with only a small recovery just before the close. On the decline many of the principal stocks, such as XL S. Steel, common and preferred, Pennsylvania Reilroad, Northern Pacific Reilroad, Union Pacific Railroad and Reading touched lower figures than they have at any time since the culmination of theupward movement in prices that ensued after the period of demoraliza tion in the market in the first days of May, and the U. S. Steel stocks made a new low record for the year. Espec ial pressure converged upon the North ern Pacific Railroad Great Northern preferred, and so-called Hill group of securities. FIRST CASE OF LYNCH LAW. The Hanging of a Murderer by His Father In Ireland. So many different versions and ex planations of the term lynch law have at various times been given and occasionally are even yet added to, that it seems fitting to recount the tragic incident which has since given a name to so manyy calamitious oc currences not only in our land, but on occasions also in that of others. The very name of "Lynch" gives the direct clew to the land of its or igin Ireland. Thackeray in his "Irish Sketch Book" in Chapter 1, which treats of Galway, thus speaks of an occurence within its precincts which in 1842 bore the grewsome "memen to" so grimly described in the words following: "Then there is Lombard street, oth erwise called Dead Man's lane, with a raw head and crossbones and a me mento mori over the door where the dreadful tragedy of the Lynchs was acted in 1493. If Galway is the Rome of Connaught, James Fitzstephen Lynch, the mayor, may be considered as the Lucius Junius Brutus thereof Lynch had a son who went to Spain as master of one of his father's ships, and being of a wild, extravagant turn, there contracted debts, drew bills and alarmed his father's corres pondent.who sent a clerk and nephew of his own back in young Lynch's ship to Galway to settle accounts. On the 15th dav Lynch threw the Span iard overboard. Coming back to his own country, he reformed his life a little and was on the point of mar rying one of the Blakes, Burkes or Bodkins or others when a seaman who had sailed with him, being on the point of death, confessed the murder in which he had been a participator. "Hereon the father, who was chief magistrate of the town, tried his son and sentenced him to death, and when the clan Lynch rose in a body to rescue the young man and divert such a disgrace from the family it is said that Fitzstephen Lynch hang ed the culprit with his own hands. MR. FREEMAN IS OUT. He Will Not Make The Race For the Legislature. To the Editor of The News: Permit me space in your paper to say to my friends that I will not be a candidate for re-election to the Legislature. I have recently had an interview with my neighbor and friend Mr. W. A. Grier ana find that he has decided to make the race. Since it has been my responsible pleasure to serve tins county as best I could in the Assembly, and believ ing it to be imprudent and unwise for Mr. Grier and myself both to make the race from practically the same community I therefore cheer fully decline I desire to give ex- j pression of my grateful appreciation- 1 for the support of my friends in the j past and further to thank all those vho would have been wining 10 sup port me in this coming campaign. These are the days when the sun's rays which the Greeks called "Ap pollo's lances" make the outdoors a joy somewhat mixed with pain and , prices. The news from the new crop sorrow for those enthusiasts of usig not so favorable. We print below stray in shadeless fields. And oh! don't the elbow sleeves make us fine targets for tan and sunburn in ten nis, golf and boating. Appolos the archer shoots well these days and Fashion's decree that we must go forth unarmed and un protected below our elbows makes us easy victims. Generous sized hats and parasols somewhat protect our cheeks and foreheads, but our almost sleeveless ness is going to, or has got most of us into trouble ere this. To be sure a little tan and sunburn will be fash ionable as long as vacations are a proper portion of everyone's summer, and may this never cease to be. But really a thick coat of tan, a big crop of freckles or even a slight case of sunburn are never sheer joys to the most enthusiastic maid or matron. And when the men return from the water and fields red as boiled lobsters they may not mind the appearance of their complexions then or later, but their sunburn lan guage is not at all the sort we desig nate as parlor conversation,, and it rather indicates that even the sterner sex do not relish sunburn when it is on them. Now if you are burned here is what you want at once, and if you haven't been even tanned or freckled yet, it might not be amiss to make some up against the fateful days when you will be. Then too if you have it made up in advance you'll not need to worry when out in the sun for this borax complexion cream is sure to alleviate all the tan or sun burn annoyances, and it is a delight ful cream for ordinaryy use when you merely want to protect your com plexion and skin. The ingredients and proportions are as follows: Fresh cucumber juice 8 oz. Oil of sweet almonds 2 oz. Powdered castile soap 1-4 oz. Essence of cucumbers .. .. 3 oz. Tincture of benzoin...... 20 drops. Boric Acid 15 grains. The manner of making and mixing these ingredients is as follows: Wash and slice two large green cu cumbers; boil in porcelain kettle vith scant half cup of water until soft and pulpy; cool and strain through mus-! lm. Measure off one and a half ounces and add an equal amount of alshohbK let this cucumber essence stand over night; in the morning add the powdered soap, then eight ounces of cucumber juice; boil very slowly and then add the benzoin. Shake thoroughly fifteen minutes, pour in the boric acid and shake again in five minutes. If you will use this Borax Complex ion Cream faithfully you need not fear ill effects from sunburn or tan; ; and beside this the cream leaves you plenty of the rich red and brown j proof that you have been in the open. If you are very prudent you will apply this cream after every ex posure to hot bright sunlight, and as the application is really pleasant you will find prudence no irksome task. And by the way take along this Borax Complexion Cream when you gc camping or on your vacation. If your men folk get burned recommend this "salve" to them for many of them who would balk at using a complexion cream will use a salve. Once they use it and find this suf fering banished they will sing your praises loudly. Ticket Suggested. There is quite a demand from spin ners for new crop.-: In prompt cotton very little is doing, and at normal the report of the Alexander Gen. Prod. Ass.: ; May has been rather too cool, espe cially the first fortnight, and the tem perature is still irregular. The growth of the cotton plant has been checked and at present the crop is almost everywhere late. 'Nevertheless the young plants are healthy, and the majority of our cor respondents hope that, with a little more warmth they wi1 reCover the greater part of the backwardness Resowings, which have been greater than last year, are finished every where. " Water is sufficient, and no com plaints have so far been heard. A few worms have been seen in some districts but it is nothing seri ous, and no damage has resulted. The reports from upper Egypt are very satisfactory and only in the Fay oum is there any delay. L. H. A. SCHWARTZ & CO., Sole and Direct Agts. for R. and O. Lindemann. June 19,-1906. A few large buyers from the west were in the mar ket during the day opcroating in print ed goods, and bleached goods, but the general trade was quiet, and without special feature. Thei-e was a more active movement in heavy sheetings for domestic consumption, at prices lower than those which have been prevailing openly, such as 54 cents for four yard 56x60's. But in proportion to the production the sales were in fiinitesimal, and has no bearing on the market conditions except so for as they were talked of by buyers. NOTICE.
